Samuel Dunning, the writer and director of "Canoe Dig It", contacted me with a request to publicize his mockumentary film on this site in order to reach our large community of canoeists. I'm happy to do so.

IMDB, which currently reports an astounding 9.4 rating for the film, describes its satiric plot thusly: "A glimpse into the world of Freestyle Canoeing following some of the country's top canoeists as they travel to the Moosehead Lake Regional Finals Competition in northern Maine to duke it out for the title of 'Top Paddler'."

Here is the webpage for the film, which lists the times and places where it is being shown in theaters and which has links for tickets, merch, and other related info:

Finally, here is the official trailer for the film, which evidently has appearances by one of our members:

The film can be discussed in this thread. If there are questions for Sam, I'll suggest that he join the site so he can answer them directly.

I missed the opportunity to see it here in Waldoboro and the director was there to answer questions, unfortunately I had a previous commitment I couldn’t change. Hoping for another chance.

In response to a DM I received, my understanding is that a mockumentary (a blend of "mock" and "documentary") is a fictitious satire or parody deliberately presented in documentary style. I haven't seen this film, but I assume it mocks the sport of interpretive freestyle paddling in costumes to music, by poking comedic fun in a good-natured way. It was made with the cooperation of two prominent freestyle instructors, Marc Ornstein and his wife Molly Gurien, who may even be the mockees. I'm not sure. Watch the film and find out. I will if it screens near me.

Here is Samuel Dunning explaining why and how he made the mockumentary film:

I have seen this film and heard him speak about it in Bethel as I mentioned here before. I enjoyed it, but can understand why some people in the freestyle community might take offence. The link below has more details about where to see it.

We're going to see "Canoe Dig It" this Saturday, in large part because of the glowing endorsement by the stunt doubles. ;)

This looks hilarious. Hopefully it will be available in some type of on-demand format after the screening schedule is completed.
