"So there I was, a med student on the general surgery service. It’s 6 AM and we’re rounding as a group: students, residents, fellows, and the attending. The other student is presenting.
"We had learned that it was very important to the surgeons to know whether the patients had started passing gas after surgery, so we would always ask when pre-rounding.
"The other student says “This is Mr So-and-So. He’s day 3 after a lap chole; doing well; vital signs stable. He is not sure if he has been passing gas or not.” And the attending says, “What do you mean he’s not sure?” The other student: “Um… like, he’s not sure if he is or not.”
"The attending, without missing a beat, says “Well, did you attach the insensible flatus monitor?”
"And, reader, let me tell you that we spent the better part of that afternoon looking around the clean supply room for the insensible flatus monitor before a kindly nurse told us we were being messed with."

A recent study monitored the flatus patterns of a cross-section of more than 6100 Australians. As is common these days, "there is an app for that." https://research.csiro.au/cshw/proje...art-your-fart/
Participants used their smart phones to log frequency, stench, loudness, duration, and detectability. Men averaged 5.2 emissions per day, while the mean for women was 4.8. When analyzed by age, the 26 to 45 year old group had the most toots.
The study addressed a long-standing medical question. In 1781 a 75-year-old scientist wrote of his desire to create a prize to invent a substance that could be added to food that would make “the natural Discharges of Wind from our Bodies, not only inoffensive, but agreeable as Perfumes.” The scientist was Benjamin Franklin.

A study reveals the average number of times Australians ‘pass gas’ during waking hours.
