Good day, I need to know where I can find info on chestnut canoe identification, there is on I will go look at and I want to know what to look for other than the chestnut sticker.... I had a first look at it, and it look like it is in mint condition other than the canvas. Doesn't look really old(craftsmanship wise).

Thank you

WCHA is good too, and you can look at the topics and pics without singing up. They also have an ID section with pictures of decks and things.
Hopefully it is not butchered too badly. People like to cut the shear line down if the rib tips rot. Pay attention to the decks...people often identify anything as a Chestnut to get more money out of it...lotsa Hurons out there. Take some pics.

Thank you. this one look in great shape, with sticker on the deck! Look like just the canvas is in need of replacement and maybe not even yet... I'll go take picture in the morning and some measurements... The guy that is interested in selling is not gone let it go for a great deal, but depending on what I find about the boat, I might make him and offer that might make him happy!!

No Title

So here are a few specs and pictures.... length= 15'6" from tip of deck to tip of deck. Width= 36" outside of outwales. Depth= 12" from top of planking to top of center thwarts( no yoke). Ribs are 2.5" wide x 7/16" thick spaced 4.5" on center(1 3/4" space in between). First and last rib 4" wide. There is a # on one of the stem piece, 17382 (maybe)....

So from what I can see, it is not a very old one.... The Inwales/outwales most likely have to be changed or fixed, they are scarfed. There is no broken ribs or planking that I can see( other than the one shown in the pictures...). It could use a new canvas... There is a huge keel.... The cane seats are in decent shape. I would be interested to see what people think!!

Cheers

In picture #7, you can kind of see a little "dip" in the keel line at the far end....

It looks like a Pal to me. I have one and used it for many years solo. I think they are excellent solo/tandem if you like wood canvas. The later models had the Chestnut Sticker on the side. Looks like it needs a canvas, and those loose inwales to ribs is an easy fix with ring nails, as is the cracked inwale and split rib. Those look like original quick scarfs by Chestnut late in the game.
Here's a Chestnut Pal going for $550 in NY https://ithaca.craigslist.org/boa/d/antique-chestnut-canoe/6211825291.html
so maybe that will help putting a price on it. The canoe you are looking at has no rot other than maybe a stem tip and looks gently used all good signs. Check each rib carefully.

This might help

When I told him of what it was likely worth, he said it wasn't for sale.......
