The Bark Canoes and Skin Boats of North America by Adney and Chapelle is now out of copyright and has been converted into various e-versions by good folks at Gutenberg.org. Unlike a few other sites that use text recognition software to render into electronic forms (resulting in lots of errors), the ones on Gutenberg are prepared and edited with real eyes. The versions even have all the wonderful illustrations and photos of the hard copy.

I too have used my copy for reference from time to time; especially when we were turning an old Mad River Explorer into a faux birch bark canoe. It obviously doesn't pass the eye test close up but from a distance, especially on a big lake, the canoe actually looks pretty good!
