Boges and me just got back from 6 days in BWCA. We entered at Island River, down the Isabella, around to the South Kawishiwi system and out Lake One. Not much time to fish, a couple bad storms, and a lot of moaning in camp from portage humping.

This was the 2nd trip for my Northwind Solo. It looks like it’s been tripping much longer. Water was low, and we squirreled through many rock gardens on the Isabella. I was only able to line once. Avoiding portages was paramount for two old dudes and an old dog.

It was a fun trip. We saw lots of wildlife and tested some recent gear additions. My fast-deployment tarp bag was cool. We carried lots of wet gear due to time restrictions (not mine). If I go tripping again (not a certainty), I’ll be in the market for a lighter weight tent. I took a 60L barrel instead of a soft food pack and Bear vaults. The barrel itself is lighter weight, and while it was nice to have a dry place to store gear overnight, it was awkward to get on and off with my physical limitations. And while 30 liters is too small, I think 60 liters is overkill. A 45L barrel would probably fit me better.

This was Bogan’s first trip since TPLO surgery last December. I had to help him in and out of the canoe, and restrict the chipmunk chasing in camp. He’s 9 now, and if I go again, he may stay home and I’ll be searching for a battery-powered heating pad.
