Cast your vote for handle wood type in knife build / fund raiser thread.

B with brass. I thought that it was walnut until I read that it is Desert Ironwood. Any of the options would be good, though.

    Setback to canoeing career

I think I could wrangle a visit, one way or another.... A bit too soon right now, but if that is an invite, I will take you up on the offer. Thanks

    Setback to canoeing career

Thanks for all of the support, everyone, it means a lot to me. And a big thanks to Robin for keeping the site up and running. I am trying to take it easy, but it is not my nature, so it has been quite hard now that I am feeling better.

    Setback to canoeing career

My wife is a hero! I am 53, which is young to me now, ha, ha, but a long time ago 53 would have been old. I do not fit the profile of a heart attack candidate at all, so everyone who knows me was surprised. I hope I will be back out this spring!!

She was told to drag me onto the floor. "Don't worry about hurting him, get him on the floor". Maybe that is why my sternum is still sore!

    Setback to canoeing career

Hi everyone, I don't post here much, but visit frequently, and have learned a lot about canoeing, paddling efficiency, canoe design, canoe building, and camping. Also, I have learned a lot about the North American continent and the tripping realities and styles in the different parts of this...

Rabbit River, Nopoming PP, Manitoba, October 10/11, 2015

I know a guy who was out in that storm on Monday, who got his tent flattened on Jester lake early - as a wake up call, and had to exit via Berrisford. That guy is taking today off (no apologies) to recover from near hypothermia. It is hard to believe that you can get bug bitten one day and...

    Down the Bloodvein and back

Did you see the new dock at the lodge at Wapeskapek on the Gammon? I flew out of there last September. Did you stop at the St.John's cabin at the St. John's rapids? There is a plaque with my father-in-law featured on it that is quite the work of art. There is also a guest book that you can make...

    anchoring a canoe

I anchored my canoe once. The wife bought a small anchor so my son and I went to try it out. It only took an hour to almost dump the canoe attempting to retrieve the anchor. I cut the line and swore off the anchor idea. But that is just me.

Hi Allan, great to have you back. I bet the Bloodvein, Gammon solo trip memories will last a lifetime. Amazing trip, and it was cool to see your progress, although I often wished you would "spot" your location more frequently. I thought I had a pretty good idea of what you were thinking with...

Reason the site was down 8/12/15

I agree with Mem and Waterdog. A short fund raiser could remedy the situation, no?

Video of 4 days solo at Marshall Lake, Ontario

Really enjoyed the video, especially the fishing and the paddle by parts. Hollywood can't have you because you are needed here.

Agreed. I am really interested to hear about the trip. I wonder how many other canoes he met on the way. Probably not many on the way back because canoe season is over here except for the hardcore paddlers. Last year at this time I did not see one other canoe all the way from Wallace lake to...

I think Alan left a spot signal from the middle of Aikens lake to give a thumbs up on his canoe. That is a deep crater lake and there are no small islands out in the middle, so he is saying that his canoe got him all the way down the Bloodvein and back up that river - and the Gammon, and that he...

Hi Roy, for what it is worth, I seriously doubt if Alan would send a spot signal from the middle of Aikens lake if he was in any sort of danger because he wouldn't be able to get the device out and play with it if he was struggling with the weather. I am sure that the location placement was to...

He might have time to go upstream, but will he want to? As I said to him, there is a reason that the natives took the Leond route in the spring and in high water. Hopefully he will get dry weather from here on and the journey back will be possible.

Whoever is following Allan Gage, he is at Stonehouse lake on the Bloodvein right now. Pretty cool that he put his "spot" link on here so we could follow his progress. It is interesting to me because I did this part of his trip back in June of this year. Artery to Stonehouse is an amazing part of...

    Marshall Lake 2015

I am glad it was a great trip. The trip reports were all great as usual. There should be a rule about too many good writers, trip reporters, and photographers on the same trip, lol. Thanks to everyone on the trip for being so generous with sharing!

Beautiful canoe, Alan. Nice logo. All the best and have a great trip. There is lots of water in the Bloodvein right now. Whenever I trip it takes a little while to get a routine for portaging and making a camp. I don't bring tent pegs because they don't work so well on moss covered rocks. It...
