    Colden Dragonfly Repair

I have done an enormous amount of damage to my lungs in my work life, so I am apt to get passionate about lung protection. As always, your mileage may vary, but I sand in these masks. For involved repairs, or working with epoxy or serious sanding/fiberglass, I'd get a particle respirator with...

Indigenous teens to make first descent of entire undammed Klamath

It's good to see young people on the water, and great to see kids reclaiming their space outdoors.

    Colden Dragonfly Repair

Erica, I'll echo Gamma and implore you to invest in a good mask. Even little repairs and sanding can ding your lungs up badly, and if you have one, you're more likely to invest the time in more involved (or multiple) repairs.

    Two rescues in one day

I'm a sucker for turtles. Glad you helped those two out.

    Barbless hooks

Fishing barbless on a fly rod really improved my line handling, and fast. There are a few places I fish where it's a legal requirement, but after pinching a few barbs I do it out of habit now, and I don't regret the odd trout that slips off.

    Paddled a Wenonah Wilderness today

Ah, I should add I have size 15 feet with boots on them, which tends to confound even the most generous kneeling seat setup. The seat in the Wilderness was actually pretty neat, if very clanky, I had never seen it before. Ease of use at expense of tradition, which is always the way, I guess.

    Paddled a Wenonah Wilderness today

Didn't know there were two; it was a Wenonah.

    Paddled a Wenonah Wilderness today

I hopped over to Saranac for a day or two, even though I am incredibly poorly set up for summertime adventure at this moment in time. I forgot my sleeping hammock, don't have a flat paddle, and didn't even put a canoe on top of the car. Despite all that madness, I took the afternoon and rented...

    Free Whitewater Paddle

Hello all, I've got an Ainsworth C100 that needs a good home, I don't think I'll ever use it. It's either poly or plastic, 54"ish. I'm in central VT but will be in Saranac probably next week. It'd probably be too expensive to ship it somewhere, but if you're in range and want it I'm happy to...

Thank you Glenn. I knew someone around here would know what they were.

    Help with paddle ID?

Hello all, I'm sure this learned community can help me out. I had an odd pair of paddles come my way and I wondered if anyone knew anything about them - they are wooden, glassed bent-shaft paddles, maybe 50" or a bit taller, and are labeled "Cam Paddles" (or maybe "Camp Paddles", with the P...

Canoe odyssey just begun from NW-most to SE-most points in USA

^I never finished the James in Virginia for the same reason. I wish the guy luck, whatever boat he's paddling. I wish I had the gumption and time to do something like that.

If you can get the cap off again, a rubber washer between wood and metal may do the trick.

Personal hygiene on extended trips (The Deodorant Debate)

I got kicked out of a restaurant in Saranac one time for smelling too bad after ten days in the St. Regis. Went right across the street to a French bistro - where I was welcomed with open arms - and had one of the best meals I can remember. That French restaurant is still one of my favorites...

    Skegs on canoes?

Perhaps this post itself could use a skeg to steer it back to the OP, but there is an enormous amount of specialization in native watercraft, a case in point being bark canoes, and they were tweaked or changed until they worked. There were known methods for increasing or decreasing rocker...

    Spring (canoe) Cleaning

As far as I know, it's not actual temperature that affects wood so much as humidity fluctuations, so if you had an especially humid season followed by an especially dry season, that might be enough to put some cracks in a gunwale. I assume you're up north somewhere, which should be nice and...

    Spring (canoe) Cleaning

I like to see someone take care of their boats! I'm not going to, but I like to see it. I just left one of mine in an open Vermont shed for the winter to see what would happen. Temps bottomed out at -12F. Today or tomorrow's the day to drag it out and inspect it. My boats and truck get washed...

    Hatchet or Saw?

The best no-tool technique I've used is to find two tree trunks quite close together, and feed a foot or so of a longer branch through them while torquing the rest of the branch sideways to crack it. The set-and-stomp works well too, if you have a rock or log handy, and is relatively controlled...
