Looking for river trips in OH/PA vicinity

Right now we're leaning towards the Clarion, with the Allegheny as a low-water back up. As intriguing as the Little Muskingum is, we need approximate travel times to do our vacation requests for work - the PA rivers are close to each other in drive time. We're hoping that by getting on the...

Self-learning to pole upstream - bow control and other tips?

Both Harry Rock and Garret Conover explain in their books that the advantage to being trimmed upstream end light in a current is that the current slides under the bottom of the hull, exerting minimal force on the sides. With the upstream stem in the water, any angle of the canoe to the current...

Self-learning to pole upstream - bow control and other tips?

Seems like the answer is: "it depends". Thankfully when poling, trim is easily adjusted on the fly by means of hopping.

Self-learning to pole upstream - bow control and other tips?

Right and right. I just picked a single simple example to imagine, but yes I assume a mid-stream would serve as well.

    Foraged Wall Hooks

The last cabin I stayed in also had an awesome free-standing coat rack made from a whole small tree with the branches trimmed and rounded off, and a lumber base added. All sanded smooth and finished nicely, form and function. My hooks are all function and no form now, but functioning is a start.

    Foraged Wall Hooks

Modern technology is awesome sometimes. Sometimes the old ways are just as good or better. It's nice to find traditional practices that still work great today. That axe might ward off the lawyers....let me know if you can get it to stop the robo-callers!😆

Self-learning to pole upstream - bow control and other tips?

Let me see if I understand correctly. Say you're facing upstream in an eddy on river right (so the shore is on your left). Is your pole on your left (shore) side, or on your right (towards the main current)? Assuming a straight reach with an eddyline parallel to the main current, how much...

    Skegs on canoes?

I appreciate tradition and experimentation. If you want to, I say try it. But personally I'd start with reversible modifications. Try hanging something off the back and see how it feels. Of course the dynamics might be different sticking off the back vs placement a foot or two forward of the...

Good all around tandem for flatwater and rivers

I'll just add that I think weight can be a really important factor. If it's a pain to get it on the car, you won't use it as much. I can't say how much weight that is for you, but for me the difference btwn a 50lb and a 60lb boat is the difference between one I don't hesitate to throw on the...

    Foraged Wall Hooks

Ok, so the post is actually about hooks for poles, and they're not on a wall, but the idea could be applied widely. I wanted easier access storage for my poles, so I'd been playing around with attaching some scraps to the back of my rolling boat rack. At first I was using some trim to support...

Self-learning to pole upstream - bow control and other tips?

Thanks, Steve, that's all helpful info. The last video looks more like the creek I was on last Sunday - shallow, gravel bottom, consistent current and gradient; drops were more riffles than ledges. I felt like I did pretty well there. My spot on Friday evening where I was really struggling is...

Looking for river trips in OH/PA vicinity

Thank you again to @Gamma1214 , @MichaelMerry , and @NoelCanoeDad for all the info. Re-reading everything more thoroughly, it seems that the real answer is that we'll have to wait until closer to the trip and see what the water levels are doing. I'm sure it will be a great trip regardless.

Self-learning to pole upstream - bow control and other tips?

I was just going back to re-watch the videos and see what I could learn after yesterday, and re-read this. I've been conflating two variables: obviously one could add weight and maintain any angle of trim, depending on where the weight is placed. Going upstream on a section of flat but flowing...

Self-learning to pole upstream - bow control and other tips?

PS: this is most certainly the case on flat water. But I assume you were talking specifically about poling upstream?

Self-learning to pole upstream - bow control and other tips?

Well gents, yesterday was a real learning experience. @Sliding Focus and I got out on the local creek yesterday after work. Flows were much higher than I've ever tried to pole in, and boy howdy it's a whole different ballgame. The drop I usually struggle to get up because of low water...

Best Sleeping Pad for Side Sleepers and Comfort on the Trail?

I was exaggerating a little, it was more like what you describe here. But as someone prone to motion sickness, that sensation isn't conducive to sleeping. I also moved away from hammocks for other reasons, like having a place to get dressed when it's raining (this was back when I did more...

Best Sleeping Pad for Side Sleepers and Comfort on the Trail?

^this! I like a firm mattress so it took me a while to learn not to over inflate - partially because I'd test them on my back then sleep on my side. I have a 20yr old thermarest with self-inflating foam core, still going strong, and a newer, thicker fully inflatable (no foam core) Big Agnes...
