    Clear Cedar Planks For Sale

Given the location and lack of knots, I am guessing Atlantic White Cedar. This makes nice planking. Doesn't steam bend as well as Northern White Cedar for ribs.

    Which canoe to build?

I have a Trapper with this decal. I believe it was used in the 1954-1955 timeframe.

    New project... 17.5' Atkinson Traveler

You should use brass canoe tacks. Copper cut tacks are not the correct shape and don't clinch very well. They have a big flat head too which is difficult to seat below the surface of the planking. However, copper is better for salt water use. I just don't think you can find copper canoe...

    Antique Courting Canoes

I have a 16 ft. Robertson, but it is waiting for me to canvas it. These canoes were also raced as shown in the attached 1927 video of a race on the Charles River (MA). Note the portaging techniques!

    What are you reading?

Although she did not mention this, but forests have evolved over hundreds of millions of years. Maybe, just maybe, they are more complex than we give them credit for. Like I said, I really hesitated to read the book. Much of her material has undergone extensive peer review. I did learn...

    What are you reading?

ppine - Have you read the book? I too hesitated to read it because I had heard some of the arguments. I will say, after having actually read the book, I do look at the forest differently.

    What are you reading?

I just finished, "Finding the Mother Tree", by Suzanne Simard. I gotta say I look at the woods differently now. Fitz

Video: Painting a Canvas Canoe, and Some Questions

Each person has their own approach, but I like a couple of coats of Interlux high build primer sanded between coats and before paint. If the last person to paint your canoe was Rollin, I don't think he uses a primer, just multiple coats of paint sanding between coats. It is always possible his...

Carry Brook to the Aroostook River, Northern Maine

Thank you for this trip report. It went well with my coffee this morning. In my youth, I spent a great deal of time in the area around Spider Lake. There is an old portage route through that neck of the woods too, leading from the Allagash Waterway east to the Aroostook River. If memory...

How Do You Buff and Polish a Painted W/C Canoe?

Don't use any wax or anything with silicone in it. It could cause trouble down the line if you ever want to paint it.

I gotta tell you, you really have to watch that Benson fella. ;) Welcome to the WCHA, Glen! I see you jumped in with both feet and ended up a Board Member. Congrats. I hope to see you at Paul Smith's.

How to Remove Vinyl Pin-Striping Tape?

If the heat doesn't work, you could try alcohol. It might mess up the shellac some, but I would think brushing on some new shellac might restore it well enough. I like painted pinstripes. This masking tape comes in many varieties for different stripes. I also like their pinstriping paint...

Video: How to Make a Steambox to Bend Wood

I like the plastic bag method for inwales, outwales and things. I still use a box for ribs.

Restoration of an early Chestnut Bobs Special

The key to identifying a Bobs is that it has thinner than standard ribs and planking to save on weight. Reaching back in my foggy noggin, I think the ribs are 1/4 inch thick and planking 1/8 inch thick. The Bobs is the only Chestnut that I am aware of that was built this lightly. Fitz

Outline of planks showing through shellac

Did you re-varnish the inside of the hull recently? Varnish can seep through the gaps in planking and show up like that. Fitz
