AK Destinations: Tangle Lakes, Delta, Gulkana

September I'm focusing more in southcentral, I think. Wildfire status will dictate a lot of the options. Looking through data for the middle section of the Gulkana as well, it will be cold but shouldn't be iced up and access should be easy via the Richardson. Not sure what water levels will be...

AK Destinations: Tangle Lakes, Delta, Gulkana

Wanted to follow up-- ended up heading on a large circle tour along the Glenn, Richardson, Denali, and lastly Parks highways. Paddled Tangle Lakes and was able to see a great variety of wildlife on the water in just our first evening-- otters, beaver, eagles, waterfowl. My father was especially...

AK Destinations: Tangle Lakes, Delta, Gulkana

Ahh, did not realize that was in there! I'm guessing there are no good portage routes?

    Needle Pulling Thread

That's my approach as well! Met a travel nurse last month and I'm inviting her on a trip in September. I need her along because she's young, single, and attractive a capable first responder in the wilderness.

AK Destinations: Tangle Lakes, Delta, Gulkana

The Tazlina route looks like a great one to run, but I'm not quite ready to take sustained class III rapids. Especially on these trips with less experienced paddlers. Looking at the Tyone river on the map, seems like a float from Lake Louise to Talkeetna would be a great long distance trip.

AK Destinations: Tangle Lakes, Delta, Gulkana

The Tangle Lakes to Middle Fork Gulkana also has me intrigued-- though I'm a bit apprehensive as to the state of the portage from Tangle and the first few miles of the Upper Gulkana...I've heard both are brushy and very buggy (more so than the rest of the area). I'm thinking I'll check it out...

AK Destinations: Tangle Lakes, Delta, Gulkana

Thanks for the responses. Should have clarified the packrafters are experienced in their rafts, but less so in canoes. Leaning towards Tangle Lakes for August at the moment-- I think eliminating the need for a shuttle will simplify things with just the two of us, and being on lakes gives some...

AK Destinations: Tangle Lakes, Delta, Gulkana

I'm looking at a few shorter length trips towards the end of this summer and into fall, and I'm looking at these areas as options. Does anyone have any experience with them? I'm looking for some 2-3 day trips, one would be with my father, 60, who is in good shape but I'd like to avoid any death...

    Evaluating Kevlar Repairs

Consensus seems to be the patch is of poor quality...and given that his price was already above what I was looking for, and that it isn't exactly the boat I wanted, I think I'll pass. Got a few leads on some Old Town Trippers in Royalex that I'll run with instead. Thanks everyone for the insights!

    Evaluating Kevlar Repairs

Here's the photo I have from the seller. Haven't had a chance to see it in person yet as I'm out of town, but he claims it was repaired several years ago. Asking price is $1000. Thanks for all the input so far!

    Evaluating Kevlar Repairs

I'm going to be checking out a secondhand Wenonah Spirit II in Kevlar ultralight in a few days. It has had repair work completed on the hull, and I'm looking for ways to evaluate how well I can expect the repairs to hold up. What should I be looking for? Are there are red flags that might...

Bead and Cove for 3/16" Strips

Excellent, that's good to know! So, for a 1/4" strip, I would want something a 3/16" radius bit in order to avoid the delicate edges?

Bead and Cove for 3/16" Strips

I'm about to mill strips and was hoping to use a 3/16" thickness to save some weight. I have a bead and cove set with an 1/8" radius, but haven't been able to find anything with a 3/32" radius...I'm wondering how necessary it is that the radius exactly matches the strip thickness? Has anyone...

Looks good! What is your plan to repair the stern?

    Yet another JW Kite

Seems as if every week there's another AK build on here! Looks great, I really like what you did with the front deck!

I can't see the female mold being an overall time savings, as you'd spend so much time making the mold as to negate any saved sanding of the final boat. That being said, if you were interested in making more than 1 hull...I could always use a tandem tripper myself!

Three Boats for Sister Sara (Cedar strip, kevlar, and carbon fiber solo boats!)

That's very encouraging to hear...trim is the area that's really concerning as far as weight goes. Gunwales will be interesting-- since I'll be making a mold from the finished stripper, I want to initially use a screwed on set of gunwales, likely something quick and dirty in order to get the...

Three Boats for Sister Sara (Cedar strip, kevlar, and carbon fiber solo boats!)

I'll likely be trimming out for both single and double bladed paddling-- I know for sure my build partner wants double bladed, and mine will be trimmed with an angled kneeling thwart. Should be a great way to test the methods side by side! The shouldered tumblehome will hopefully be most useful...

Great looking plug! I'll be following this closely. If you ever need an extra hand, I'm down in Anchorage and just starting my first build, and would love to lend a hand and learn a thing or two!
