That's how I do patch/repairs: lay a piece of smooth plastic over the west out fiberglass and get a smooth result with minimal sanding. I think this could work but the hard part will be getting plastic to closely follow the shape of the outside of the hull. Maybe a vacuum bag would help?

My 2020 Outback lacks that little metal bracket you are using for the tie down but I like this solution and will try to figure out how to adapt it!

Yes. Not just for lining/tracking but car topping. Best and strongest place for bow/stern lines. And yes, it is traumatic drilling a brand new stripper hull.

For a cedar stripper another option is a piece of 3/4" copper pipe. Just use thickened epoxy with a little cedar sawdust to thicken it up.

Are there any composite boat builders in DC/MD/VA? I have a friend with a particular Royalex hull that he'd like to duplicate in composite. I'm in Maine now and without a shop or I'd do it for him.

Sapele is another good choice. Looks like mahogany, works like mahogany, but far cheaper than many domestic woods, and not endangered.

Just take up whitewater canoeing. Every whitewater canoeist "goon" strokes on whitewater except they call it "the river J". The theory is it is a much stronger steering/prying stroke in moving water. EDIT PaddlingPitt beat me to it.

I don't cook over an open fire very often. But I always have a fire after dinner when tripping with a human companion. Great for shooting the breeze. When tripping solo or with the dog, I might have a fire 50% of the time. Of course it is a lot of work to gather, cut and split the wood.
