BWCA first time, solo, August 2018

Great report! the challenges of Solo. How did the Garmin work for time between texts? I have not really got to try out the Spot X yet - work! Will watch for the video! Piragis is a really cool place! Stopped in back in May on my way thru Ely and it made me want to go canoeing just having...

    black bear now in area

I hike more than I canoe - and many use the Ursack. The only problem with the Ursack is that if they get to chewing on it they may get a food reward and hang around. This happened on the SHT on memorial day weekend to one guy who posts on facebook and You tube. Freaked him out good...

Scary and it could happen in a canoe around cottage country.

Nice to know there is some justice in the world. I have been pretty lucky so far with my experiences - but probably due to lack of exposure more than anything.

When is it "too cold" to paddle?

love the guy in the santa suit with the warming liquid. Robin - I don't think your link was working. Its your deer paddling videos that have me wanting to try it.

When is it "too cold" to paddle?

Thanks Mike for clothing list! your making this easy! but have to ask - is the "Gearfreak 103117" kinda like "Jenny 8675309"? :D:D Found a good site to pass along with some layering advice. https://paddleboston.com/resources-s...ater-paddling/ As for ice - I really want to try ice diving one...

When is it "too cold" to paddle?

I am lovin' the responses - I laughed lots! Thanks everyone - good to know I am not crazy to be thinking it. For gear - I got hot to not. I just have more faith in my paddling skills than my '71 9.9 Johnson.

When is it "too cold" to paddle?

As the title says - when do you say it's too cold to consider using the canoe? Well, if you do consider it - at what point do you decide to be smart and stay on dry(ish) ground. I was hoping that the weather this fall was going to be more like last year with positive temps deep into November but...

The reason why urban wildlife is increasing (humor)

Walking the dog the other evening I heard a pack of coyotes yipping and howling. I am on the edge of a city of 750,000

    Cheap alternative to Blue Barrels

I used a 90/14 universal needle and I believe the thread I used was left over from a Rip Stop by the Roll tarp - Gutermann Mara 70 black. I usually use the Gutermann that you can get at the local sewing place. Have used Leather or Denim needles when the fabric is too thick. Bothwell...

    Cheap alternative to Blue Barrels

Earlier in this discussion I noted that I had made a harness for the Gamma Seal Lid Contractor Buckets. Having the harness made it easy to carry the buckets on their side as well as upright. The side carry made it easy to carry two on a portage with a pack on your back. It cost my about $30...

The Unicorn Hunt, or The Save The Moose Campaign, 2017

I feel your pain memaquay. Add early archery & black powder seasons and by the time general rifle comes along four to six weeks may have passed by the time you head to into the wild places. I drew a Elk/Moose tag for Dec. Seasons started Aug 28. A Unicorn hunt indeed - I like that title.

    Cheap alternative to Blue Barrels

I have made a few webbing harnesses based on a design that a fellow on our Quetico Trip had on his barrels. I shot some video when I made mine and plan to edit as a DIY project one of these days. Essentially, it's 8 feet of webbing that holds the barrel and provides a top and side handle to...

    Wintertrekking.com

My guess is that one of the large forum companies like VerticalScope or Internet Brands made them an offer. Good for them. Unfortunately my accountant brain went to deduce a market price. Wintertrekking has 1,715 current members of which only 270 have posted more than 20 posts. Internet...

    Report on Adirondack gathering

nice write-up - I really should figure that facebook thing out to comment. I noticed in the group around the campfire photo another gamma lid equipped canoe bucket. I had never seen these till my Quetico trip and that fellow had made web harnesses for them. I finally got around to making them...
