    WCHA and Adirondack Canoe Symposium

I'll be there at the ADK club paddle outing which is from the 10th to the 21st. staying in the Lydia Martin Smith dorm (by the beach). Will come over and look at the great craftmanship and beauty of the WHCA canoes wearing my canoetripping T-shirt. If you are eating meals in the college...

    NFCT work weekends

Was that chef Noah? I know he makes a great Dutch oven blueberry cobbler.

    NFCT work weekends

I've done six work trips on the NFCT. Two in NY, two in Vermont and two in Maine. The last one was the Moose River bow loop about 6 years ago along with Coldfeet. Coldfeet also magically just happened to be paddling near Raquette falls (he hadn't signed up for the work trip) when we did some...

    WCHA and Adirondack Canoe Symposium

The ADK club Paddle Outing will also be at Paul Smith College from July 10 to July 20. Usually between 80 and 90 paddlers. The ADK people normally leave the campus between 8 and 9 in the morning to do paddles. Typically going in small groups of around 10-12 to local places to paddle. Based...

    Rodents

While camping on Lows Lake in the Adirondacks in the middle of the night we were woken up by a child like scream followed by Pete in his heavy Scottish accent saying "go back to sleep Ken". Roughly 10 minutes later I'm in my tent playing whack a mole with either a chipmunk or red squirrel...

    What's a scratch worth?

I think that depends on whether I'm buying or selling. If I'm buying the scratch is worth a urge discount in price (as I'd ask the seller about how he took care of the boat). If I was selling I'd say the scratch was minor and look how good the rest of the boat has been maintained. OK, I'll...

Fibbing To Your Spouse About Canoe Stuff

I ordered a canoe in the fall and it was to be built over the winter for spring pick up. When I drove home with it my wife asked where did that boat come from. My response " I've had it for a while and I left it stored upstate" Luckily while we argue about everything from what TV show to...

    Animal Behavior

I agree as most of the gulls we see locally are ring-billed with Herring gulls coming in second. My use of the generic term was a result of experience mentioning something like an Alewife and people look at you with a blind stare but if you say herring many can understand what you are talking...

    Animal Behavior

Since most of us spend a great deal of time outdoors I am sure you’ve seen some animal behavior you don’t really understand. Here are a few of my examples: We had a turkey nest next to our driveway with eventually eleven eggs ten of which hatched on the same day. Turkeys normally lay one egg a...

    Snake Stories

Lots of snake stories. First one when I was about 12 years old. My friend Marty and I were into muskrat trapping and Marty went to pick up what he thought was a muskrat by the tail. Turned out to be a water snake and Marty froze as the snake tired to get free with me yelling just drop the dam...

Paddling a solo canoe with a Greenland style paddle?

I've used both (GP & EP) in my kayak and don't recall any real difference in the amount of paddle drip but I normally wear a spray skirt so it's not something I pay attention too. Most of the time the GP paddle is under the bungees on the front deck as a spare paddle. I haven't tried the GP...

How to unjam a stuck double blade paddle?

I've had the problem with carbon fiber paddles when they get hot. The easiest and nearest solution is to soak them in water. It usually only takes a minute or two dipped in water at the takeout to free the shafts. I suspect the shafts expand from the heat just enough to lock them together.

    Defacing money vs Fender Washer

The new 2022 quarters have Washington facing left instead of right. So you could justify drilling old quarters by saying they were obsolete.

    Why Are You Here?

I still claim I got my end of the canoe (front) around the rock. The next thing I know I'm in the water yelling to Coldfeet to get his feet up and facing down river. If you want a real laugh ask Coldfeet about removing the surgical stitches from his head while on a paddling trip. Then you'll...

What was the first river you ever paddled?

Swan River in Patchogue NY which was about 500 feet from our house at about 7 or 8 years old. But to be honest the rivers on Long Island aren't very impressive so I'd have to go with the Delaware around the Skinners falls area roughly 10 years later. Side note: what could possibly go wrong on...

    Amazing and memorable events

Does lightening count? First experience was when a lightening bolt hit the chimney of my parents house. It knocked the bricks off the chimney with one crashing through the window of my bedroom about 2 foot from my bed -- being about 9 or 10 at the time it sure woke me up. Second time around 17...
