    Sad to Hear

I still have my '76 fiberglass Malecite. My wife and I purchased it at the plant in Stow, Vermont. It was our primary entertainment when we were first married, house poor, and living in Rochester NY. As I remember, it cost something like $300. I really wanted the Kevlar, but couldn't swing...

How to Solo Lift a Canoe

For the last 45 years, I have always turned the canoe upside down, lifted from the stern, and walked under the canoe until the portage yoke was on my shoulder. I then let the canoe balance on my shoulder, and off I go. There has never been any damage to the wood decks or bow that couldn't be...

    Making Cedar Strips

I came across this blog from a fellow in Sweden building an Ashes solo day canoe. Lod traced his canoe building from beginning to end, and shows details of his fixtures and techniques. There are a lot of pictures and details showing every step along the way. I believe Lod uses the skilsaw...

    Innegra & Aramid

Cathy, A close friend purchased a Kevlar (white Gold) Trillium this year. It is an incredible canoe, and I don't think you could go wrong with it. I can't speak for white water, but we did take the Trillium on a week long trip to Killarney park, and experienced severe winds and waves. The...

    Why I trip alone

I haven't gotten to trip alone due both the wife's concern for my safety and also to living in southern Ohio where it's a long way from anywhere I would want to trip anyway. About 25 years ago, I bought my first solo canoe because it was too difficult to find people to canoe with locally. This...

    NFCT

I have been interested in doing the nfct also. I suggest you check the paddlers blogs. There is a lot of really great information there. There is also a book titled something like the thru paddlers guide. It seems that the nfct is best tackled early spring as the rivers get too shallow in summer.

    Portage Pack or Dry Bag

I use a dry seal pack with hip belt. My pack has been on Killarney and Algonquin week long trips for the past 25 years and is still as good as new (a bit of scruffing and fading). It may be a bit heavy by today's standards, but I still like it. Erik

    Wetsuits

Dave, The video was quite an eye-opener. Last year, I experienced the sudden shock of "cool" water immersion while taking a whitewater canoeing class, and I still remember the overpowering need to breath in. one thing that I found really interesting was how quickly the swimmers in the video...
