Poll: What type of vehicle is your usual canoe vehicle currently?

I ran a '94 Ford Ranger into the ground (338,000 miles) and loved it (long bed even allowed for sleeping options) Although I miss it at times, it was replaced with an '08 Fusion that gets almost twice the gas mileage. To haul canoes, I added a class 1 receiver and a t-post to the rear and a...

    Boating Lights

Interesting. Although I don't do it, I've always thought that PA required a white stern light & the red / green navigation lights on the bow (not a bad idea if you're paddling someplace that sees powerboat traffic). If you're just looking for a white light to satisfy the requirement as quoted...

    5/8" Nylon webbing

I'm pretty sure the paracord that I use is nylon and I've seen no deterioration in any of my seats. (it's also a whole lot thinner than your webbing) Especially if your seat is removable, web 'er up & paddle til it fails.

POLL: Strip build -- staples? glue? clamps? other?

I think that's an extremely accurate observation. Personally, I staple and consider the staple holes part of the building method so the visible holes don't bother me in the least (although I can honestly say that I've never gone medieval on an area like Alan demonstrates upthread). It's...

    Trouble bear

I dunno for sure but that might depend heavily upon what he's been eating. I've had bear & I like it but squirrels are tasty here too (where they feast upon acorns, various nuts and lots of corn). Further north where they eat nothing but pine cones, they are said to taste like turpentine...

From someone trapped in the Wabakimi fires

Ditto. That's a heckuva TR and, perhaps, the 1st ever by a non-member. Thanks for posting Robin.

17 1/2' Atkinson Traveler wood canvas canoe

The map as avatar is a nice idea. If you want to list your location in your profile, click on your profile, find the "about" tab and click it. I'll agree, the boat is stunning... good luck with the sale.

    Multiple Paddles on One Map

IIRC, I imported my inReach data to Caltopo and it worked well.

Damaged Sea Clipper - Repair or Replace?

My initial thoughts pretty much match Alan's... Not gonna lie, that looks pretty bad. It's (IMO) certainly worth removing the gunwales & thwarts to see what happens. Ideally, the hull will move toward its pre-squashed shape and you may be able to reinforce sufficiently to regain & maintain...

After 88 years, this burn-pile old canoe is getting a makeover!

Well done, Patrick. It's awesome that you have the talent & the patience to restore these beautiful boats.

A Solo Allagash River Trip In July

Personally, I like seeing a canoe being used the way that it was intended to be used. (As long as it doesn't get fuzzy... only cows should be fuzzy) I really enjoyed the TR and the pics. Thanks for taking the time to post.

Time to throw in the towel

Sorry that you're not up to all the restoration work, but it's great that you're getting some help with it instead of leaving them undone. Keep doing what you can and enjoy those afternoon naps... Nothin' at all wrong with a nice nap.

    Quetico closed too

That might be an even better opportunity for them.

    BWCA late June 2026

Which is, IMO, plenty of reason. Glad you made the trip & shared it with us.

    Quetico closed too

Crap, Don was very helpful in planning and was destined to be an extraction option if needed. Hopefully, they can rebuild.

Don't be ((afraid)) of Ontario's one venomous snake

Good thing because I don't carry enough for both of us. I've never worried too much about snakes, particularly the rattlers. They're rattling to let you know they're there & he already knows that he can't eat you... as long as you don't step on him, you just need to move away.

    Can’t Catch A Break

Looks like you could build a nice loop trip among the lakes SE of Reindeer Lake but archives here are pretty sparse. Any maps or intel available?

How to bail out when kneeling

Fear of entrapment is one reason that I can see for paddling a tandem backwards instead of paddling a solo canoe. Personally, I build my own so I can place the seat wherever I wish but that was one consideration when I started placing the seats further back than standard. That said, I've never...

    East coast beaver attacks.

I know people like that; always the doom & gloom scenario... often becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.

    Puffer Tents

I'm runnin'. Last thing I need is another 17+ lbs on the portages.
