Wasioto Whitehall (Skin on Frame Rowboat) Build

The boat is perhaps 20% complete at this point, today, July 24th. I'll bring you kind folks up to date, and hopefully keep posting progress till complete. When I purchased the plans I worked at a Marina. They described me as Dockboy, I called myself Caretaker. Two of my three days a week I...

Wasioto Whitehall (Skin on Frame Rowboat) Build

I am building what I call a Wasioto Whitehall. Whitehalls were the ubiquitous water taxi and delivery boats in Boston and NY harbors from around 1820 to 1920. A fixed seat, one to two position rowboat tending to range from 13ft to 17ft I think ('m not an expert nor nautical historian, these...

Gel Coat or Epoxy for Repair?

Here's a pic which shows level of lack of gloss, degree of pebble, and toughness of aftermarket (manufacturer provided, user applied) vinylester. As harsh a scratch as the worst pre-repair (other than primary complaint), happened as I shoved off. When I added my weight the boat of course...

Gel Coat or Epoxy for Repair?

Steve, SystemThree has 1/4in knap foam rollers for epoxy spreading. They'll do a thinner smoother lay. Tape off the entire gunnel. Resin will drip to lowest point. (and you might start from 'top' and layer towards hull)

Gel Coat or Epoxy for Repair?

I'm not an utter weight weenie, 2lb is not much (tho 10% is), it's that I alone am at this boat's advertised cargo capacity. Add a pack of snacks and water, and we're over! A 25lb BoyScoutPrepared pack, and we're way over! A tackle box and cooler, net and pole... Absolutely I can't wait to...

Gel Coat or Epoxy for Repair?

Main break is repaired. That area of hull is stiffer than surrounding now, instead of collapsing in a crease as it did after the accident. But weave is still poking out in 1-2 hairs. I did not cut/shave/off the protruding fibers before attempting to paint in the vinylester because they were...

Gel Coat or Epoxy for Repair?

Exterior is two layers of vinylester. Oh, one thing I forgot to mention on interior. Vinylester cures quicker in a can than spread out in a pan, just like epoxy. I didn't get all seven patches filled in by time can went solid. The big, main injury got clumpy application. Also, vinylester is...

Gel Coat or Epoxy for Repair?

Repairs sure aren't invisible. But, as one poster said on this forum: "Once a beater, always a beater." I may have fallen in love with it's 10yrs of near pristinity and use as a delicate precision craft, but I got this canoe to be a beater. To know more about canoeing with, and turns out that...

Gel Coat or Epoxy for Repair?

'Course, for you to stop me from doing something I shouldn't, it helps if I post my plans long before doing them. Northstar recommended sanding the repair areas with 80grit, and the whole hull with 150g to prep for the scratch repair. I didn't like the idea of 150, but the only discs I had for...

Gel Coat or Epoxy for Repair?

Been a bit, have fires needing held back and have another canoe to use. If it were the fishing canoe that were down this repair'd happen'd sooner, but as is I can use fishing canoe for sport but not sport canoe for fishing. I'll document what I'm doing for sake of later lurkers, and if there's...

    Snake infested water bodies

Yes, Erica, I do feel the same way. Equate the dangers of bears and big cats with snakes. Except that I am lots scareder of snakes than bears. I am always watching for them, and when I see one I'm far more alarmed than when an oncoming dump truck crosses the double yellow. And am never going...

    Snake infested water bodies

If a snake is trying to climb in a boat (or drops from a tree into) it's not because its of a mind to get itself some human. Its cuz it didn't know that long thing in the water was a conveyance containing a human. Speak to the snake: it'll beat tracks. Animals do not like the sound of the...

    Snake infested water bodies

Yes, Erica, it happens, and when it does it makes the news. But you are far more likely to hurt yourself getting in or out of the tub than bit by a snake. According to Wikipedia, about five ppl die per year from snake bites. According to the Coast Guard, about 120ppl drown every year in...

Shellac vs. paint for boat bottom

Old thread to renew and I apologize for that, however I am very interested in Shellac sealed canoes and hope as many others as possible hear of the option and become interested as well. I actually initially learned about armoring W/C canoes with shellac from this site. I've built two canoes...

    Snake infested water bodies

No matter how scared you are of snakes, they are more scared of you. I forget the precise stat, but it's well over 80% and I think high 90s, of snake bites are on males under age of 25, and on the hand or forearm.

Thanks Memaquay. Sounds simple, or at least straightforward. Boy, coming back from river yesterday I felt like sky had collapsed. Now, thanks to this forum and you folks, I feel scratches and repairs are all part of the process. It's good to be here guys, I am grateful.

Gel Coat or Epoxy for Repair?

Thanks Jim. Your comment has gotten me pondering deeper questions on the pursuit of appearance than I wanted to wonder about myself. I might say I would like to repair this canoe to new as best I can, but that perhaps a painstakingly repaired scratch does look better than no scratches at all...

Gel Coat or Epoxy for Repair?

Turns out my canoe doesn't have gel coat it simply has resin. I got a few kits from Northstar's 'Repair' page. One is "Composite Repair Kit." It's description says it is for: "damage to the interior of your composite canoe that shows as white lines or fractures..." I guess that's the white...
