Three dead, one saved, in another low head dam tragedy

That was simply not enough boat for a rescue there.

Don't be ((afraid)) of Ontario's one venomous snake

I figured out I had to relocate my snakes pretty far to keep them from coming back. Had one uniquely deformed that kept reappearing until I delivered it to the refuge five miles away.

Don't be ((afraid)) of Ontario's one venomous snake

Is it okay if I just haze them then? Make scary faces and insult their mothers? (needs a 🤪)

Don't be ((afraid)) of Ontario's one venomous snake

I remember that post @Jmharrick. Rattlesnakes should be afraid of me....very, very afraid. Or else... As long as we have that understanding, we're good 👍

    BWCA late June 2026

The Magic has been on my mind. But I require just a little more maneuverability. Its little brother, which I've passed a chance on three times now out of either fear or ignorance, has been controversial in my thoughts. I have only seen pictures and read conflicting reports. I can now say that...

    BWCA late June 2026

I looked hard at the Yellowstone and considered trying it. Would have paddled it too, but things were pretty hectic there that day with the 4th coming up and all, so although the offer was open I decided to keep things simple and focus on the question that'd been bugging me for several years...

    BWCA late June 2026

I hadn't planned to go to the BW this year, but when my favorite nephew David and his friend Eric invited me along - how could I say no? So, the 1500 mile drive was on. Some wildlife in the rest stops on the way... Reason for the snakes... Unusually large ungulates... I intentionally...

    BWCA Temporary Closure 7/14/26

Actually, I think that's relevant. As I understand it, we share firefighting resources with Canada to some degree. So that should be in mind.

    BWCA Temporary Closure 7/14/26

My friend who just came out of BWCA says he saw no smoke. With so much of Ontario on fire, I suppose this closure is partially about firefighting resources being spread pretty thin.

BC is looking good right now. Hope it holds out until mid September.

    Quetico closed too

According to Gaia, that Wabakimi fire is 657 thousand acres! How many millions of acres are on fire in Canada right now?

    Quetico closed too

Gaia has a fire overlay, as does OnX. Looks like a normal Idaho fire season - which is to say....just awful.

    BWCA Temporary Closure 7/14/26

Surprised to read that one fire is a controlled burn that flared up. Traditionally here, they do most controlled burns just before the rainy season going into fall/winter. Do they allow mechanized firefighting like the Superscoopers in the BWCA?

    Can’t Catch A Break

Looks like I dodged a bullet this time. I've gotten used to being thwarted by smoke and fire, and come to expect it. How far west are you willing to go? Montana seems to be unaffected by wildfire so far.

Yellowstone bison attacks old man in campground

IIRC, it was when I was in Custer State Park that I watched a bunch of people walk right up to grazing bison bulls and get away with it. I'll admit I a little disappointed. ;) Anyway, I can imagine that some people, after seeing this unevent many times repeated, believe the fuzzy cows are not a...

Yellowstone bison attacks old man in campground

Photo and video evidence are always deceiving. I wonder how close they actually were when the bison decided to charge. I'm used to seeing this kind of incident starting with the tourist looking a lot closer to the animal.

How to bail out when kneeling

It's a legitimate concern, and you're wise to be thinking about it. Anyway, enjoy that Swift P14. I really liked the one I paddled.

How to bail out when kneeling

I've paddled that canoe, and I think as you get more seat time in it, you'll find it to be stable enough to have the seat high enough to clear your feet easily and still feel reasonably stable when sitting. That's a very nice boat, BTW. Another thing that will improve with time is if you point...

How to bail out when kneeling

This is how my Esquif Vertige is set up, and I slip right out of that too, if I want to.

The law of tonnage applies to four legged critters as well as vessels.
