I have never used a barrel. I wouldn’t even know where to buy one. Even if I knew where to buy one, the shipping to Alaska would probably be too expensive. I just pack my food in a portage pack.
I bought a Quetico pack, a portage pack liner, 2 canoe thwart bags, a padded seat bag, and an assortment of stuff sacks from 2L to 12 L. Great gear and very well made.
Viruses are some of the smallest microscopic organisms out there. If there is a filter that will stop a virus, I would imagine that it would take forever to filter a quart of water.
I never buy or eat freeze dried food. It is too expensive and I don’t care for the taste. I also have a heart problem and have to watch the sodium and fat content. I dehydrate my own food. For bears, I just keep the food bag away from camp. A brown bear can reach up to 14 feet into a tree...
I have used sno-seal for 50 years and have never had any leather degrade. I have a pair of LLBean Maine hunting boots that are over 40 years old that I keep the leather waterproofed with Sno-seal and the leather looks brand new. Must be armchair experts.
Erica, you could do the Yukon River from Eagle, AK to either Circle, AK or the Dalton Highway. Wild, remote, and still car accessible at the put in and take out points.
The reason I recommend the kindle version is so that you don’t have to wait for a book from Amazon. The last order I made with Amazon took a month for them to ship out the order and that was using Amazon Prime. The post office delivered my order in 3 days.
Anybody considering canoeing in Alaska, I would recommend you download the Kindle book, The Alaska River Guide. It lists a lot of different choices for canoeing in Alaska. Some are even reachable by road.
The 14 day quarantine for people flying into Alaska ends on June 2, 2020. So if you fly up to Alaska on June 3 or later, you could rent canoes and go on our rivers and lakes. We have over 3000 rivers and over 3,000,000 lakes.
Most knives that I see today do not have a good sheath. The leather is thinner than it should be and they have no way to lock the knife into the sheath. Buck Knives has some of the best sheaths I have seen. Nice thick leather and a strap that snaps around the handle to keep the knife from coming...
I built my own removable portage yoke. Where the yoke sets on the gunnels, I padded the wood and clamp brackets with leather. It eliminated the slippage along the gunnels.
I have carried a knife since 1960. I have traveled through 48 States, 4 Provinces and 1 Territory and I have never heard of a sheath knife cutting through a sheath and injuring the carrier in a fall.
Thank you everybody. In reading all of the different posts, I believe I have discovered my problem. I had the bow of the canoe on shore as I was getting in or out of the canoe. I will find out for sure tomorrow when I go back to the lake to canoe some more.
I learned to canoe in high school in 1968. I went canoeing regularly until 1992. I was proficient in whitewater and flat water. I bought a new canoe (Old Town Discovery 119) this month. I took it out to a local lake to check out the canoe and myself. I swamped getting into the canoe. Once...
