Electrical device you are most likely and least likely to eliminate

I currently take a Spot, Garmin Montana and my cell phone. Later this month, I will be adding a Satellite Phone. I take these with me when I am in the canoe, on the ATV or snowmachine. I go mostly by myself and into some really remote areas here in Alaska.

Carrying a gun when canoe traveling just because

I carry a .45 pistol all the time and when I am away from the van out of town, I carry a .45-70 rifle. I carry a gun when I am snowmachining, canoeing, hiking, fishing, hunting or on an ATV ride. I have only had a few comments. One man asked me what I was afraid of and my answer was "Not a...

How much stuff do you take on a day trip?

I take most of the same gear for a day trip as well as a multi day trip. I leave out the tent, sleeping bag, etc. I also take less food for a day trip. I am 70 years old and mostly canoe alone here in Alaska so I need to be self sufficient since there won't be any help coming for me.

    Camping in the rain

I have been camping for about 60 years. I am as comfortable camping as I am at home. If it is raining, I don't want to go camping, but if it starts raining while I am camping, it doesn't bother me.

    Tackle kit/fishing equipment

I used to fish using spinning gear. Got pretty good at it. Then I learned to fly fish and got pretty good at fly fishing. I gave my son in law all of my fly rods, reels, fly tying equipment and supplies. Took out one of my old spinning rods & reels and couldn't catch a fish with it if the...

    How did you learn?

I learned to canoe in high school in the late 1960s. My high school was beside a river and the school had a canoe livery on the river with a lot of Grumman Canoes. We learned to canoe in gym class and canoed everyday for about a month or longer (weather permitting) in the fall. After we...

    Svea 123

I rebuilt my Svea 123. Works like brand new. I bought the parts from a vender on Classic Camp Stoves. Easy to rebuild and the Svea is still one of the best stoves ever made.

    Winter Footwear

US Army White Bunny Boots good for -60°F standing still or US Army Mickey Mouse Boots good fo -20°F standing still. I personally like wearing a thick pair of wool socks with these boots for the cushioning of my feet. I have personally wore the White Bunny Boots at -55°F standing still on ice...

Vintage 1974 North Face Sleeping Bag

You can restore some of the loft by putting the sleeping bag in a dyer, no heat, and add a clean tennis shoe with no laces. I have a North Face Superlight mummy down sleeping bag that I bought in 1980. I do this at the beginning of each camping season. It really helps the loft.

Solo Tripping in an OT Pack 12

This is what I would do to outfit an Old Town Pack. I would make a clamp on portage yoke for it. I would add a thwart behind the seat. I would shock cord both thwarts. I would shock cord both decks for coiled lines. I would drill holes into each end 4" down and 2" in from the stem and epoxy...
