As stable as a Camper but lighter

Do you feel kevlar is not tough enough? It's surprisingly tough and not hard to patch. Lots of options from 30 to 35 pounds.

    Help with a canoe cart

This causes me to tell the story of my trip last year, which included the Racquet Falls portage. Late afternoon - when I usually try to avoid long portages - and it's isn't really very wheelable IMHO. There was an off duty ranger - I think she was from Indian Lake - and she helped me down the...

    Swift Detachable Yoke

Not there in early production. They had a clamp on but to get it to grip they put a heavy textured tape on it. All confirmed with Bill Swift. It works ok. I have the carbon fiber yoke.

    Help with a canoe cart

Just saw this thread. Hope I'm not repeating but I have same cart as OP. In user his "4 corners" method but just one suspenze cam strap on each side, and double wrap it around thwarts. Works well. Somewhere I read carry and extra nut for the wheel. Haven't needed it yet but can see how it could...

Proposed Twin Metals Mine in MN near the BWCA

As far as proximity, I was on Gabbro some years ago and could clearly hear the test drilling. It was almost loud.

    Canoeing Plans for 2026?

I love New Mexico. Did a lot of work there in 1990s through 2010s. My retirement plan was summer in Ely and winter in NM. My wife had other plans. The culture and history of NM, the variety of mountains to desert, all wonderful.

    Wabakimi is the Plan

Picture in one of Kevin Callen's books of home portaging through Toronto train station. He said the stairs were hard. I looked at a wabakimi project map at canoecopia that had a lot of flag stops on it through the park.

    Canoecopia 2026

I agree attendance was down and really down Sunday. Since the 2020 cancelled show, attendance has been like pre pandemic attendance. I missed the Happy Camper, but Ron Kesselring was very good, as were the Hudson Bay Girls. Didn't buy anything, a combo of age and travelling by air. Which was...

    Canoecopia 2026

I'd be interested in a meet up but my son may meet up with me. Schedule something and I'll try to make it. I'm not doing BWCA.com dinner.

Great Lakes ice coverage - Winter 2026

Went to an environmental conference Saturday and one of the sessions was on Great Lakes ice. Clearly the record shows the ice cover is lessening.

Pack canoeists, do you use portage thwarts or yokes?

I use the Swift carbon fiber yoke on my Prospector 14 Pack. They didn't have it worked out the first year or so, and the clamp slipped. The add a piece of tape on the gunwale and it usually works. Tighten the clamp really good. They have since incorporated a threaded insert in the gunwales. I...
