Seems it would be uncomfortable if you shift your weight to the side so your butt cheek is resting on the short bar, as in Canadian style paddling. Or more uncomfortable than a standard seat is in that situation. But if you made it wider so you never sit on the bar, that would work very well...

Can't say it was the beaver dam, we got a lot of rain in a short time, but... Normally that dock is a foot or more above the water, and reaches the shore. At least it didn't rise high enough to float my canoe away.

It does the same thing that the keel or centerboard on a conventional sailboat does, keep the boat from sliding sideways when the wind is from the side.

I haven't built a strip canoe or worked with cedar, but for years one of my go-to tools for wood shaping has been the Stanley Surform. They call it a plane but it's really an open rasp. It cuts fast and is much less likely to tearout than a conventional single blade plane.
