    Alan's Bloodvein II

I apologize ! It's Gamma's canoe, and he can put paper machay on it, if he wants to ! As for real world results, A puncture through the outer layer, will leave a strip built canoe, in worse shape. If that hull flexes over a rock it will survive. If you rip a hole in the outer layer, the...

    Alan's Bloodvein II

Adding the extra layer of cloth to the inside is wrong. Sorry, but I feel the need to express this. Take a look at Alan's Bloodvein pics, after his trip. See how much wear there is to the outside of the hull. Adding extra layers to the inside, only adds stiffness, that could have been...

Proposed Twin Metals Mine in MN near the BWCA

It's not worth taking the chance, on the mine not contaminating the BWCA. There is No fix, if the BWCA is contaminated. The BWCA is such a gem ! Giving a foreign country, the right to mine, smelt the ore, and sell it to China, is not in the interest of the USA. Praying Minnesota will stop...

    Thin Strip Jig

Yes. I had the same problem with our Saw Stop. I'm not saying it's a fault of the saw. You just have to be aware of it. The locking nut on the jig needs to be beefer also. Good to hear you are building another canoe! Jim

    Thin Strip Jig

We have a jig, like yours, at the shop. Yeah I gave it some thought. I've used it to cut strips, for Trivets, at the Nokomis Wood Shop. They were less than 2' in length. Works relatively well, but ours slips, a little. You have to monitor strip thickness. Thicker strips were just reduced on...

    National Boy Scouts Day

Scouts played a big part in my life ! My Dad had passed away, when I was 13. We had a small Troop, My Mom couldn't afford to send me to camp. The Troop leader found the funds, to send me with the Troop. A dept I can never repay ! Jim

    Alan's Bloodvein II

My concern with wet epoxy is when you lay out the dry cloth, it might snag the cloth and distort the weave. I guess it would also depend on how many spots you were filling, and where the spots were. Like Alan, I fill voids before the final sand, and then I'm ready for cloth. Fact is, I just...

I use wood glue, instead of epoxy. no need for epoxy, and the wait time involved. You are just filling a hole, not a structural situation. Jim

The glass should stick to the hull. Glass it all at the same time. Trim your cloth, to about 2" of the hull. Should have no trouble glassing it. Jim

    Alan's Bloodvein II

I found the Hogging effect, when I pressure fit the strip joints in the football. I actually had to glue a block to the inside of one hull, to pull the hull into shape. Once I glassed the outside ? It stayed. After that I I removed enough of a strip, so I didn't have to force it into place...

My canoe shop. Before the Nokomis Wood Shop. I've been tilting for about 15 years. Tilting will make sanding that Shouldered Tumblehome, easier too ! Jim

I tilt my strongback, to make it easier to cut the center line, and then fit the strips. Helps in the sanding process too. Jim

    Kite +6%

Just a note. I spaced the leading edge, of the seats on all my solos, regardless of the hull length, or symmetry, at 5-6" aft of center. 10" aft of center, seemed too far back, when paddling empty. You can adjust with weight if you need to. Nice thing about Aluminum gunnels ? No finish...
