Thanks Mike. I think I understand your solution and I've noodled over the gunwale stop thing as well. Initially took the shim-shape (triangle) drop off the ends of the 2x2s and planned to glue it to the top of the crossmembers however a permanent stop would not accommodate every canoe the same...
My wife took over the Ford so I needed to rekindle this project. Definitely fate as, for the life of me, I can't figure out why Mad River didn't come with an Astro mounted as a standard option??? How did they miss this? Roof Rack construction as follows...
Measure, dry-fit, measure again to...
Sorry but again there is a response awaiting me that I somehow missed however lots have happened in my canoetripping world in the past couple months so will share what I have learned in a another post string hopefully soon...today...???
End Cap/Hood Ornament: I toyed with the idea shown in the...
Thanks so much for the smiles this morning everyone.
The yoke will definitely get a pad no doubt...and no apology either. We travel quite minimalist but the pad is a must for me.
OK...I'l stop whining about the weight. Still under the impression/delusion that the energy saved in paddling this...
Thanks.
Have yet to try any of these 4 paddles but have logged a number of miles with both bent and straight shafts in the past. Don't recall any lengths however as never really paid any attention but have read up recently on how to properly size them so should be in the ball-park as you...
Completely off-topic...
Hey Dogbrain/Mark (or whomever wants to try solving this puzzle)
I think I've got the gravity manipulation thing figured out (see first photo). I took this photo a number of years back when working for a granite quarrier/fabricator as it completely threw me for a loop...
Thanks Mike,
Did a bit more reading this morning on gel coat repair and it certainly seems like using gel coat to fix gel coat is the best answer and just live with the unavoidable color difference. When the project first started I had thoughts of keeping it as unmolested (visually) as possible...
Thanks everyone. Any constructive criticism on the "purple" floor? The camo duck boat paint I picked out is called "Earth Brown" and it looked entirely different in the store. The original floor color (see photo) I unlovingly refer to as "Synthetic Flesh" so hopefully a step in the right...
Thanks everyone for the insight. As suggested I'm going to leave it as is aside from a bit of waterproofing to the tip. The boat I purchased only came with one MR paddle that I assume was supplied with the initial purchase.
The original plan was to get my son (the stern-mam) a proper lengthed...
Progress as it currently stands...
All wood has been refinished to "natural" look.
Seats caned
Floor painted
Thwart extended
Still working on...
Couple chips and spider cracks
Noseguards to protect gunnel tips/ends
Contemplating skid plates
Mounting roof rack to freag'n Astro Van. Sounds like...
You are right they are glassed and quite heavily too. The tip of that particular paddle is wore down into the wood so if steam were even an option it could get in through the tip of the blade if there were even a way to do that? Probably do more harm than good I would imagine.
Picked up a pair of these old Sawyers yesterday. Super excited being they are vintage and in really nice shape aside from the slight hook in the blade of the 54". Ultimately wondering about the design having the lamination butt-joints perpendicular to the shaft. I have inspected them closely and...
Hey Mike, I just now came across this post which somehow missed when searching the site earlier for "cane". Still a bit befuddled with the mechanics of the site so have sent a couple questions to the webmaster. Anyway, hopefully attached here is a link to my recent post on re-caning. I found it...
Continually amazed at the number of different canoe manufacturers there were/are. Kind of like coming across some oddball snowmobile one's never heard of before at the local car show. Thanks for sharing!
For those of you contemplating tackling this, here was my process & takeaways. Would definitely do this again as found it to be not terribly difficult & definitely rewarding. :)
PROCEDURE IN BRIEF

Looks like I've got more homework to do.
May have mentioned this in an earlier post but a lifetime ago I worked (one summer) at a fiberglass canoe manufacturer in Bemidji MN called Core Craft. Bad news is I never got a chance to work on the canoes as was hired to buff/polish the fiberglass...
Gellcoat repair just seems difficult without more practice and right now I am perplexed not knowing the ultimate purpose of this boat. The hope is to come across another canoe that may serve my tripping purposes a bit better (hopefully something lighter and more beat-up) and keep this one as...
Sorry everyone but my Gmail did not flag me (as it had in the past) that I had any responses. I will go through them tomorrow and reply shortly there after. THANKS!
Definitely can relate to misplacing stuff but tools generally are not my problem being quite OCD with organizing the workshop. Billfold and keys are an entirely different story.
A number of years ago I purchased a nice tool bag for my son and have been stocking it with this-&-that as I either...
A creative, resourceful, tinkerer after my own heart. Often times I find myself spending more time organizing & creating efficiencies within the shop than actually working on the projects they are intended for. Not quite certain what that means???
