Put me down for a couple of XXL (don't leave us 6'7" guys out).

Maps. What do you do with 'em?

I LOVE maps! They are everywhere in my man cave (i.e. extra bedroom where my wife can close the door to my fly tying, guitar playing, trip planning mess!). I would never be without one (or my compass) on a wilderness trip. I rarely carry a GPS. The ones for the ADKs where I paddle are so...

Best donuts or best donuts on the Road

I live in RI, so its Allie's all the way. They have been on a number of national TV shows, but this is one thing that exceeds the hype. If you live in RI the secret is to sniff out the handful of spots that pick them up early in the AM, and resell them. There are only a handful, but the...

Safely tying in gear, and storing lines

I agree with Yknpdlr (who ironically was one of my instructors in the early 90's). I paddle mainly in the Adks, and have never tied anything in. I have my packing down to a science (large Frost River pack for trips 3 nights or shorter, I add a Frost river day pack for trips longer. I rarely...

    Look what i SAW

I agree with Glenn, it blows the Bahco for canoeing. I own the 2000. I debated about going smaller, but am completely satisfied.

    Getting it Right

Like others have stated, a sleeping pad. Im a big guy (6'7", 300#), and a combination of weight vs comfort always eluded me. That is until I tried my first hammock. I use the biggest that Hennessey makes with an under quilt from Jacks R Better. I use a very light Western Mountaineering bag...

    Fund Raiser for Another Year

PayPal transfer just sent, thank you, this is generally my first stop in evening when I sit down!

    Mountain House

As other above have stated, I much prefer to dehydrate my own food, but I do keep a stash of freeze dried meals on hand for those unexpected trips, and the vast majority of those meals I keep on hand are MH. I find that I enjoy the flavor of the MH meals over other freeze dried brands. Now...

Milling planking for a W/C canoe

Dogbrain, you did it almost exactly the way I do it. The shop made fence is fantastic, I would have never thought of a broom handle! Im glad it went well.

Shop Tools Pet Peeves (a mini-rant)

I may be an extreme case as I make my living with my carpentry tools, day in and day out. I do high end custom trim and cabinetry on site, and custom furniture from my shop. I couldn't make what I need to in order to feed my family if I was disorganized. I switched a number of years ago to...

    Strip building a truck cap?

Can anyone foresee any issues with strip building a truck cap? My baby (1975 Jeep J20) is done and on the road, but it needs a cap. The bed is narrower than standard, so the run of the mill 8' cap won't fit, and finding an old Jeep one is like finding leprechaun gold. I could have one custom...

    Question for Osprey/Kite builders

Stripperguy, thanks for the offer! I have paddled one a friend here build a couple of years ago. I loved it, but when I put me and the frost river pack in it felt "sluggish". I should have thought of upping the scale. That's a good suggestion, and may be just what the dr ordered. Mem, I...

    Question for Osprey/Kite builders

I'm looking to build a new solo, mainly for 3-5 day trips in the Adirondacks. I love the design of the Osprey/Kite but... I'm 6'7" and 300#'s, 340-360 with gear. I don't think the Osprey/Kite has the volume. What is the opinion on lengthening it to 16' to handle my size/weight?

    Weather woes

It also comes down to being realistic with your abilities, especially if your solo. Know what you can and can not do, and stay within your limits. And as the Boy Scouts tought me "be prepared" always.

    Weather woes

I will keep my eye on the weather. If it is a trip I have some leeway as to when I leave, I may go a day or two earlier or later to accommodate the desired weather. If I'm locked into my departure date, I rarely cancel. As several have already stated, weather that creates potentially...

Extension to make a floating dock canoe friendly

What about a smaller section of a floating dock like jet dock. They are 2'x2' interlocking floating cubes. They are made to have small powerboats drive up on them. Our docks at camp are jet docks and they are gunnel height. Just sit down and swing your feet in!
