    Howdy from Austin, TX

Welcome John. Buffalo River is on my bucket list... Anything else really good down there?

    Ronco Pocket Fisherman

Wait... you got 5 or 6 channels?! Wow. We got two unless one of us went up on the roof & twisted the antenna. Then we could get a third but, of course, we lost the first two until it was twisted back.

Coating the interior: Epoxy or Varnish?

A pad would, almost certainly, be the easiest option as well as being the easiest to maintain (just toss it when it gets worn too badly). As for products, application, etc., I agree with the above and think I'd reach out to Swift and get their take on it. Either way, please let us know what...

Info on Chivelston, Harris & Harold Lakes outside Wabakimi?

Well, this trip just got a whole lot tougher. Due to employment uncertainty and the work ethic that appears to disadvantage most of my generation, I delayed getting the train tickets locked in. When I called VIA rail this morning to buy a ticket for August 10th, I found out that all Westbound...

    Wabakimi is the Plan

FYI: I talked to VIA rail this morning and there is no space remaining for canoes on the Eastbound train from mid-July until after Labor Day so planning early is critical during the peak season. (They have space for 6 each day but all spaces are already reserved).

    Ronco Pocket Fisherman

I'd say that's accurate. Still, at just $50, grab one up and try it locally before toting it along & depending upon it for sustenance.

    Alan's Bloodvein II

One thing that I'm really not sure how to do is keep overlapping the strips as I close the football. I know I've seen people do it but I've never been able to keep it going past the bow & stern. On this build, I did remember to lower the bow & stern forms for stemless building, so I had...

    Wabakimi is the Plan

This should do it: https://www.wabakimi.org/uploads/1/2/9/3/129364235/parkrailaccess.pdf Note that these stops (including Armstrong) are "by request" and pick-up needs to be scheduled 48 hours in advance. (note: the days are wrong in this pdf but the mileages are correct. The Westbound...

    EM White Guide 20'

    Outstanding! Nicely done.

    Packing a 30 L Barrel

Nice archive dredging. I've been considering a barrel but I haven't had that many issues finding trees to hang the bag in and I dislike the look of the blue barrel. Somehow, the white doesn't seem as bad. (I noticed that RBW is offering red & orange now too... red looks nice IMO)

    Alan's Bloodvein II

I don't use decks (extra weight IMO and I'm already disadvantaging myself by using heavier woods) but I suppose the purple could find its way into a float tank panel...) I'm ok with it whether it stays purple or not. I'm curious about the effect of the spar varnish on both the purple and the...

    Got it up there

It may be a gravity thing. I know it's always a blessing to find that you can still get it up.

    Alan's Bloodvein II

I cut the extra from the chine today. I decided to do it before doing much more stripping so that, if I made huge, gaping holes in the side, at least I wasn't completely stripped and ready to sand. I know that one typically uses a plane to remove the excess and I have planes and...

    Strength training for canoeing

Makes sense... Like walking. Walking in a mall is good but walking outside, on uneven ground, will exercise more muscles and improve core strength as well as balance. I do nothing strength-training-wise except argue with an occasional horse (most are compliant). I probably should though in...

Portage Pack Liner vs. Dry Bags in Portage Pack

I'm not a huge fan of shopping online or buying from chain stores but I do make an exception for dry bags. I bought 2 packs (10 bags of assorted sizes) 4-5 years ago. They've done well and you can't beat the price. The variety of sizes makes it easy to organize and different colors let me know...

    Alan's Bloodvein II

I'm up for trying new things... might try that on the next one. The only thing I'd bet I WON'T be doing is like I did on my Freedom (1st strip right at the chine, 2nd along the sheer and tapered every strip between the two)

    Alan's Bloodvein II

Sure was. I'm still a little freaked out by it and I can now see why you throw a filet inside in that area. Honestly, I was going to round them off hard but the bow is pretty high, the chine runs out pretty far and I'm wondering if that was part of the problem I ran into on the Merlin. I...

    Alan's Bloodvein II

Didn't work exactly as planned but I'm getting there. I normally carry the bandsaw to the porch but weather (rain changing to snow) chased me inside. I blocked off the heat to the shop (keeps the sawdust upstairs) and proceeded to cut out the forms (I also cut out a paddle blank if you're...
