Ontario Crown Land non-resident camping permits

Would King Charles or Prince William or Harry need a non-resident permit? How about the average UK citizen? Hopefully, bureaucrats and citizens won’t hold our country’s leader’s policies against us, but things seem to be getting more adversarial. Is there something one can wear, say or do to...

    Time to Gear Up

I didn’t get much canoe camping this season, but appreciated my collection of evolved camping paraphernalia, but also I learned where my gear is deficient. I already replaced my Helinox Chair Zero, which was tippy, uncomfortable and hard to get out of (funny I never noticed these deficiencies...

What height boots do you prefer?

What size you use in the Trekkers? I have a pair in size 12 that are too big for me. Used them once 15 years ago. If they’ll fit you you’re welcome to them.

What height boots do you prefer?

Earth Boots? I wore the earth shoes for a while in my youth. They were supposed to be easy on the joints, back. Is that the case for the boots? I don’t remember feeling different but I didn’t have the physical problems I have now.

    New Paddle Impressions

The noise is in the power stroke. Not anything horrendous, just noisier than other paddles. Little whirlpools coming off the shaft.

    New Paddle Impressions

It’s not loud, but the flat stem above the blade is noisy, but only if you’re trying to paddle with no sound. It’s a racing blade, so probably not even a consideration in design.

    New Paddle Impressions

Used the new Badgertail for a week in BWCA and loved it. Went paddling the other day and used my ZRE bent shaft Whitewater. I’m now in a good position to compare the two. The Badgertail is easy on the shoulders and much quieter than the ZRE WW. I can hear the sucking/slurping noise very...

    Boiled Linseed Oil

Well, it’s what Badger recommends. Decided to stick with that. I don’t know if it’s lighter weight when dry, but I didn’t want to risk adding weight with BLO. Non hardening oils could affect the fibers. Just go with the safe, proven.

    Boiled Linseed Oil

I’m finishing sassafras. Hate to build up w weighty finish. Sounds like i do need some other oil. Ordered some hemp seed oil. A quart should be a lifetime supply.

    Boiled Linseed Oil

I’m have a nearly full can of BLO. No hemp oil, no Alaskan grey goose oil. Why isn’t BLO good for a wood paddle? I do have coconut oil. Would that work? It gets thick when cooled, so it might hang in the fibers?

    Stinky Canoe Pack

My old waxed canvas canoe pack stinks bad. The water it sits in hasn’t always been “pure,” for sure. Anyone have some tricks for getting the stink out? I once had a rain slicker that sat rolled on my cantle for several years. Smelled awful. Tried washing and it didn’t work.

    Physical Canoeing Resolutions

I did pushups since my army stint in the 70s. 50 each morning until I was 60, then 30. Bench pressed off and on. Now with 2 bum shoulders I’ve left my shoulders in God’s hands. Long as my arms stay attached and I can put my canoe on the roof I’m satisfied.

    Physical Canoeing Resolutions

I’m working harder than you guys when paddling. SW Ohio has the most polluted watersheds in the continent, so more resistance to the hull, of course, harder to paddle.

    Physical Canoeing Resolutions

I find fitness resolutions are best made this time of year, before the decadent and sedentary moons arrive. Keeping in shape is much easier than getting in shape. I’m no where near my peak condition, but im better than I was. Next paddling season is going to be a big one, but only if I work...

    Paddle Blade Edge Protection

My new Badgertail paddle is showing a little wear on the tip from some rocky landings. Does anyone dip their tip or run epoxy around it?

Best Places to Live in the US for Canoeing?

Ely 20 years ago. Don’t know if I’d enjoy summers there nowadays. I’d look hard at the UP of MI. Short drive to Ontario, some cleanish seasonal rivers, some awesome shoreline, and a short drive to Ontario (bears repeating).

    Non-Slip Camp Shoes

I’ve been using some lightweight waterproof high tops for camp shoes and they’re good except they are like wearing ice skates on damp rocks. I fell last year and nearly lost it this year on several occasions. So, Im wondering what folks depend on to keep upright and dry in camp.

    September BWCA Trip

Im considering that very thing if I can clean up other stuff and the weather forecast is good.
