    Removing The Stern Seat

How far forward did you move the seat, and does the yoke hit your knees getting in/out?

    Removing The Stern Seat

Does anyone remove the stern seat on a tandem to use as a solo and expand capacity?

    Wife’s New Car

Well thanks for the help. I just bought a 2025 RAV4 XLE for Linda. Will mount a 70” Yakima rack on it for shuttling. We can take either 2 canoes or a canoe and her Yak. Should be easier to load. This will open up river tripping here again. Outfitters around here stopped shuttling a few...

What are your current solo canoes and how do you like them?

My only two currently: Northstar Northwind Solo 15’6” UL Kevlar, and a Swift Prospector 14’ “Expedition” Kevlar. HOWEVER! I’ve got my eye on an Esquif Prospecteur 15 or 16 in T-Formex for remote river tripping. I’m leaning toward the shorter boat for solo maneuverability and weight, but...

    Wife’s New Car

Wife drove the RAV4 today. Factory rail spread was 30”, best so far.

    Wife’s New Car

Inside spread on my explorer is 36.5”. Outside spread is 42.5”. Very secure with 2 canoes on the highway. Towers are mounted to factory holes.

    Wife’s New Car

Neo, What’s the spread of those 2017 crossbars? The rails we saw had holes for the factory crossbars about 26” apart. The inside was smooth, so I don’t see how an aftermarket tower would clamp on. The wife loved the CRV but that aspect ruins it for me. Two canoes 70” crossbars need a tad...

    Wife’s New Car

The 2026 model Subarus are much more expensive than necessary, and we haven’t found any 2025s except Crosstreks. I’m not a fan of FOBs either. My Explorer’s FOB needs a battery every year or so. Keys don’t need no stinking battery.

    Wife’s New Car

Looking to replace my bride’s Outback for Xmas. She likes the Honda CRV, but I hate the factory roof rail for attaching a canoe rack, and the financing is not attractive. I looked at the Ford Escspe, but can’t get comfortable with a puny 1.5L engine. Year end terms and price is much better...

Fears while paddling or on canoe trips

Getting severely polluted water in my mouth or eyes. I’d love to get back to worriying about big windy wild lakes.

Rutabaga Paddlesports in Madison, Wisconsin, is Closing (NO - Staying Open)

My favorite store in the world.🙁 if I was 40 I’d buy it myself. I love Madison and the rivers of Wisconsin are good paddling.

I think Daren is selling the company now, so it will remain open, yay!

    Paddle Blade Edge Protection

How many coats of hemp oil are necessary? Seems pretty porous still.

    Time to Gear Up

I have had a dehydrator and vacuum sealer for years. I’ve done meals. Mine are not as good or varied, and they don’t store as long. Chili Mac and lasagna are the only homemade ones I cared for, and the noodles in lasagna are hard to keep vacuumed sealed. I also like cooking in a bag to limit...

Turtle Flambeau Flowage , my pup Max ‘s first trip … success!!

Nice. I almost did that trip earlier this month. Never been there. I was a little worried it would be crowded with Green Bayans, motor boats. Figured I could do Sylvania as a backup. Looks like a nice trip.

    Namekagon Encounter

Tryin, Next time you’re there during high water season, try the Totogatic, which drains into the Namekogan. Put-in at the Minong flowage dam and camp or take out below the confluence. A wilder ride, and it’s mostly bordered by state wild lands. Bring a saw just in case.

Defaced another boat - Adding lining holes

Note: I don’t tie down using my lining holes. I imagine stressing the vinyl tubing and the epoxy seals. Fortunately, my north wind solo has some holes up higher for a hand loop. Just using the handle on my Swift for tie down purposes.

    Stinky Canoe Pack

Of course, mine sits in sewage rich bilge every time I use it, so there’s that. It could be that waxed gets stinkier than unwaxed. My old waxed frost river canvas packs had the same odor, but not as bad. I tried several deodorizing treatments on my slicker and nothing worked. Haven’t noticed...

    Felt safe until now

So, it’s the old “tried by 12 or carried by 6 rule.” Or, the more extreme “SSS” rule. What about capacity? I put a magazine extension on my shotgun and I’m wondering if that ruined it for bear gun duty in Canada.
