I built my own removable portage yoke. Where the yoke sets on the gunnels, I padded the wood and clamp brackets with leather. It eliminated the slippage along the gunnels.
I have carried a knife since 1960. I have traveled through 48 States, 4 Provinces and 1 Territory and I have never heard of a sheath knife cutting through a sheath and injuring the carrier in a fall.
Thank you everybody. In reading all of the different posts, I believe I have discovered my problem. I had the bow of the canoe on shore as I was getting in or out of the canoe. I will find out for sure tomorrow when I go back to the lake to canoe some more.
