    What's this paddling technique?

The Haida paddles I've seen all had a grip on them. I had one in my possession for a while. I was holding it for a friend who was a Haida. He carved it as part of a cultural program in school. It had his family Totem on it. I had it hung on my wall and really enjoyed it while I had it. As far...

    Humorous outdoor situations or events

This short story is not funny at all. There is absolutely no humor in it, in fact it is very sad. The funny thing about it is that It made me laugh my head off. I was on a trip with a good friend on the north slope of the Brookes Range in early September. We were in the hot tent with the stove...

    Travel Fishing Rod and Case?

I only take pack rods on trips. The ones I have came in a tube or soft case. The tubes for my 9 foot, four piece fly rods are tuff to fit horizontally in a pack, but it is no problem with shorter four piece spinning rods. BTW, from what I have seen, good quality fly rods are either one piece or...

Does canoeing northern areas reduce the luster of the southern areas?

I tripped in Alaska for almost 35 years. There were wolves, grizzly bears, and BUGS and the fishing was amazing. It hasn't diminished my enjoyment of tripping in less "wild" places. In fact the opposite may be true. The beauty and generally easier trips I've been doing lately, makes it harder to...

    Bow pinning vs. stern carving

If you get your stern down and release your bow, I don’t think you can skid the stern. I’m curious if you can carve towards your paddle side to minimize yaw, for one thing.

    Bow pinning vs. stern carving

That does sound pretty bow heavy from a centralized seat, but I like that you can get that trim. With trim like that I'm sure it did turn fast. Next time you're out, see what happens if you slide the seat back to get your bow out of the water. Then lean into your turns. See if you can feel that...

    Humorous outdoor situations or events

Years ago, my wife and I used to take an annual trip to Florida in the winter. We would do a trip in the Everglades and also visit my mother. This story happened while visiting my mother. Gail, myself and my mom went to the beach one afternoon. After sitting a while Gail and I went for a walk...

Headwaters Canoe compares 3 16’ Chestnut Prospectors

That's a good photo, and I'm not even a Chestnut guy. They look pretty similar to me although the one on the right with the half ribs looks like it has a flatter bottom. It is the one built on the original Chestnut form and I'm thinking the closest to the original Prospector. But like I said...

    Overcoming Fear of Whitewater

I think you need to change more than your gear. You'll need to change how you run rapids, by doing back ferries and going slower than the current and avoiding the big stuff. I think that when you make not flipping your highest priority that you won't flip, at least with your skills.

    Overcoming Fear of Whitewater

There is a big difference between paddling WW with a WW specific hull with floatation bags and thigh strap or pedestal, and doing it while tripping with a load. I've swum many times paddling WW, but only once when tripping. I always practiced from a trippers perspective. That is going slower...

    Overcoming Fear of Whitewater

I should have added that I've done WW several trips tandem and did a lot of practicing tandem. I've also done some easy solo trips, like the Oswegatchie and solo practicing with a light load on the Lehigh River. I think I'm confident and skilled enough to be able to come up with a game plan to...

    Overcoming Fear of Whitewater

I would and I hope to. I plan to go light enough that I have the option to portage around sketchy stuff.

    Overcoming Fear of Whitewater

I would say that I respect white water and not fear it. I didn't attempt anything over C1 until I took a WW course. Now I only fear pinning my boat, getting beat up swimming a long rocky rapid or drowning.

    Camera Recommendation

The bridge cameras looks like a good choice. Great detail in those pics, much better than with a phone. It's also compact enough for tripping and the price isn't bad. I would only consider a bigger camera with multiple lenses if photography was the main purpose of the trip. I would like to be...

    Photo of the day

I'd like to upgrade my equipment to something like that. When I went digital I went to point and shoots, always intending to get a real camera with a good lens again. Is that the only lens you need when out in the boat for wildlife shots.

    New River Tripper

Nice boat. Looking at the seat placement I don't think you will have any problems paddling from the stern seat. Paddling from the bow seat backwards will create a lot of yaw, being that it is 35" wide there. I also don't think it will take much weight to get to a trim that works.

I like the Merlin app too, it's very easy to use. Great photos Marc. Correct me if I'm wrong, but It's obvious to me, that you are not using your iPhone.
