    Wabakimi solo trip spring 2022

"I also had another visitor: a chipmunk, which took an interest in the ingredients I had laid out for cooking. No, actually I was the visitor, the chipmunk had its residence here." Ha ha. I like your perspective, humility, and gratitude, and fully agree with you. Great trip and report, thanks...

    What the Shell?

I've owned only 1 Goretex jacket, and I have to admit it was a beauty. An expensive beauty. It was worn strictly for family canoe tripping, and it held up quite well. I did feel morosely guilty expensively wrapped in budget busting finery whilst my nearest and dearest were adorned in plastic...

    Canoeing Plans for 2026?

Our life plans get kicked around, moved around, and shuffled. I hesitate to even try to put plans to paper but the dream is always worth it. This '26 is full of possibilities, including welcoming a new member to the paddling clan. We're planning some long weekenders.

Candle Lantern: Safely use in a tent? How to clean?

As a young tripping family we were enthusiastic about candle lanterns of different sizes; from 1 to 4 candles per. But on one trip our son accidentally touched the top of the big lantern during a card game and that changed everything. As a nervous dad the risks became insurmountable to me. ie I...

    plain hamburger

Gourmet burgers hit the cuisine world years ago, but IMO, like rock n roll, it they can never die. Burgers rock! ha kahel is gonna hafta start another thread for Tripping Burger Recipes. Funny. Our eldest son said he had hit upon the perfect burger meat recipe, and hosted a BBQ to demonstrate...

    What got you into canoeing?

Romance. Not the Harlequin type, I'm talking the idealistic what if only kinda thing. I suppose we'd almost call it historical reenactment. Reading about Champlain, Cabot, Cartier, Thompson, and Mackenzie, and others stirred my interest in my teen years. But I didn't get out there till many...

    plain hamburger

Funny thing is, my paddling/life partner and I haven't tried hamburgers canoe tripping. Seems pretty straightforward, right? Pork chops, butterflied and stuffed yup. Bacon, well naturally. Steaks, oh freaking yes. Chicken, and not like that other guy eats it, yes. But never hamburgers. Not...

    Photo of the day

My younger brother is both talented and retired, which leads him into all kinds of projects and directions. Some practical, others less so. Not quite sure where this one fits but he is having fun with it. He started making these beer candles and sitting them on "paddles", like you would sample...

    Food handling while tripping

The common denominator here of course is cool temps. Whether in the bow of a canoe, steel hold of a ship, or shaded portion of a pack, they've all got to control temps to delay spoilage. I know this is obvious but...

Swift Drops a New Tandem Tripper - Wabakimi 18

I'm purposely avoiding a rant today because it's a pleasant snowy Sunday and I'm tinkering with the idea of a 3rd coffee. But here goes... That wavy gunnel line/asymmetrical hull is freaky but so interestingly inspired. I love where and how these designers are taking things way outside any known...

    Food handling while tripping

I've seen fisher folk fillet their catch and store those in Ziploc bags stored out of the sun. Prepped and eaten later same day.

Headlamps. Do you guys use 'em?

When we got as far as Huntsville* one year my memory kicked in. An event that doesn't usually happen, so best not ignore it. I suddenly remembered I'd forgotten to pack the headlamps. So we popped in to a big box store to check out the selection. It was very poor, but reasonably priced. Along...

    Temagami Location Question

I wound up on that vid after binge watching others from those camps. One of which might've been the Thelon, but who knows? Different vids from different camp trips is likely. But it sure isn't Temagami. Those kids get around.

    Temagami Location Question

I watched that vid a short while ago. IIRC it's from a camp trip the youth group took in the north. Sorry, I can't remember the camp name (there are several on L Temagami) but I believe they tripped down a portion of the Thelon (?), Nunavut.

    Solitude isn't for everyone

On a cycle ride in Burgundy we passed by a string of happy school children along the canal path, each and every one of them singing out " bonjour!" as is their learned cultural etiquette*. (Yes, it is an oft misunderstood thing.) After 20 or so I opted for the occasional "bonne journee!" * This...

    Burning plastic

I'd posit the pollution thing is as much to do with scale as anything else. Besides, we are all part of the pollution problem. As consumers we assume the responsibility, like it or not, of the product/byproducts and their eventual end of life decisions. Not the perfect industrial business model...
