    Oak Stripper

The lines look nice... I'm trying to figure if the red is due to stain, or if they used a very amber resin for the glass. That's got to be a beefy boy. Full 1/4" strips, too. I did Some weight calculations a few years ago. If they're about accurate, I'd guess that canoe comes in around 75-80...

    Too cold to paint, so...

I've successfully used the white vinegar/steel wool version on Red Oak. Beautiful blue-black. Unfortunately, It's been spotty - I have had difficulty duplicating the result. Seems to vary from piece to piece. Thoughts?

    Paddling in the Pool

Ohh... some pretty water. That's pretty much the exact opposite of my current local conditions. We're dryer than I've ever seen this early. Of course, we got major T-storms and 2+ inches of rain tonight, so making up for it a bit. I'm somewhat familiar with the same conditions as @Bob B. and I...

    Stapleless using fishing line?

Re: line in the joint. I've also done this a couple of times, and in my case the line did stay in the joint. I'm someone who sees all the flaws in my own builds, and I have to say that I really can't see these after glass and finishing. It is, however, a bit fiddly. Also has troubles with...

First stripper build: Prospector-16 Help & comments appreciated

Be aware that TB3 in particular is known to "Creep" in bent laminations. Probably would be fine with the epoxy/glass encasing it from the outside, but since it's encased anyway, regular wood glues are probably a better choice.

First stripper build: Prospector-16 Help & comments appreciated

Welcome to the shared insanity of canoe building. a little addendum to this particular bit of advice: Be aware of conditions where you canoe. I end up in situations where I track in a lot of sand and fine silt. It tends to stick in the weave if you choose not to do a fill-coat on the inside.

    Cold-mold advice & glues

Anyone ever done a cold-mold (wood layup) build? How did it go? Any advice? I'm continuing my quest for a different approach to light canoe builds with less-than-perfect woods. I can currently get Eastern White pine in reasonable quantities for a half-way decent price. (US$1.50/bf) I've been...

    Two Piece Aluminum Gunwale System?

Just did a little looking around on Northstar's website. They do seem to be using that style - there's a reference on one page to a "Proprietary Two Piece Gunwale system," and all of their pictures with aluminum gunwales do not have fasteners showing on the outside. Currently, it seems that the...

    Clinch Nail lengths...

Anybody ever worked with http://www.faeringdesigninc.com/index.html? They've got slightly better prices, but places that don't have a proper online ordering system make me nervous if I don't know the business.

Have You Ever Had To Be Rescued/Evacuated On A Canoe Trip

I'd second that. Sometimes the ones that were a disappointment to someone are the most telling, or give the best hints on what to be aware of.

    Not quite the BWCA

Looks like fun, and always good to see a canoe pup. Do you know what exactly that caterpillar guy is?

Have You Ever Had To Be Rescued/Evacuated On A Canoe Trip

No evacs from a canoe trip... (Haven't tripped that much yet) More miniature disasters, minor catastrophes, such as hypothermia on an 80+ degree day - though a power boat was involved in that one. OP is more what rescue stories should be... properly prepared group being aware of their...

Large Game - Managing meat condition during warmer temperatures.

Definitely some things to think about, and some research to do. Especially good point that I can, in fact, choose not to shoot if I think that conditions will be problematic -Just a mindset difference between "Need to come home with venison" and "Enjoy some focused outdoor time with possibility...

Large Game - Managing meat condition during warmer temperatures.

I've recently become aware of a couple of (large) chunks of state land within a few hours of me that feature paddle-in camping. The surrounding mainlands with be open for archery whitetail deer starting in September. This is very tempting, assuming my bow skills are up to snuff by then...

Hmmm... Looks reasonable. Looking forward to hearing what you think of the quality.

    Coming soon: Picaridin review.

It does seem to vary with body chemistry. Works well for me -and seems to keep the deer flies off, at least- but my dad tried it once and immediately went back to DEET. I've also found that what I've been eating recently makes a big difference. I'm on an "absolutely no bananas ever" diet during...

My first wood canvas canoe, Chestnut Pal

Soo... the Used Canoe Salesman suckered you into a repair apprenticeship in the bargain? :D That's hilarious. Lot of stories in that canoe. She looks.. happy, just floating there, even with half her planking missing.

    St Regis area paddling

Funny how we remember what we want to... Assuming that the photos are in the same order that you named the locations, Green Pond is living up to it's name! Looks like a lovely area to get lost in.

    Clinch Nail lengths...

Well, been digging around the interwebs. no matter which way I slice it, it looks like $60 worth of fasteners for what is supposed to be an experiment. Anyone have alternate ways of fastening fairly thin planking?
