    Building Laminated Canoe Paddles

Interesting questions. As to the method: The entire blade is sheathed with epoxy saturated fiberglass. As such, the various wood laminations are fully protected from the water. The very tip of the blade is an epoxy compound with various fillers, so even a chip in the tip, would not result in...

My 1st paddle BUILT FOR DISPLAY

I have others that perform perfectly and look darn good. No need to chance scratching this one. Thanks. FYI, I have been building and selling paddles for many years.

Yes. Walnut and maple. Correction. The middle laminate in the edge is ash. Maple is more prone to cracking when bent like that.

My 1st paddle BUILT FOR DISPLAY

After 40 or so years of building paddles, I finally built one that will likely never be used. It will hang on a wall, in my home. It's not that it couldn't be used, it is a fine freestyle blade - perhaps the nicest one I've ever built. It has razor thin blade edges and balances perfectly. I...

What next? Need recommendations for a solo-able tandem canoe.

Perhaps a bit self serving, but I thought it was time to chime in. I designed the Savage River Harmony for use as either a solo or tandem. They outfit them both ways. Mine has both tandem seats and a "center" solo seat. It makes a fine day tripper or weekender as a tandem. It's a high volume...

    Building Laminated Canoe Paddles

I finally got a chance to finish the "recycled" paddle, made from repurposed western red cedar (from old utility poles) and hard maple (from salvaged flooring). It's a SHALLOW WATER SPECIAL. LOA is 51". Since I have no personal need for it, it will become one of the few "stock" paddles that I...

    Which Canoe Should I Take?

I'd go with the Penobscot. If you have the option of installing (assuming that it does not already have) a "center" seat, that would be a great improvement. Front edge of the seat should be 4-6" behind the centerline. Height to be for your comfort, but generally 8" or so from the bottom of the...

    Building Laminated Canoe Paddles

I recently came upon a source of recycled, old growth, western red cedar. It's beautiful wood but certainly not clear stock. It takes a lot of planning on how/where to cut/mill, to work around the knots and other defects. Given the scarcity and cost of buying clear stock and the fact that it is...
