Your three favorite pieces of comfort or luxury canoe camping gear

Of course there is... (I actually own one of those Mondo Kings for car camping.) The linked article has the author calling a fairly standard 2.75", 4.8 R-value pad a "luxury item". In the shoulder season that's a survival basic, and in fact would be uncomfortably cold much below 40F.

Your three favorite pieces of comfort or luxury canoe camping gear

I don't think a sleeping pad qualifies as a luxury item....that's like calling a compass or a yoke a luxury item. Agreed on the chair. Fishing gear & binos probably round it out for me.

    Camping with no tent, hammock

I have a bridge hammock (warbonnet ridgerunner) & use the same pad I use on the ground. If I had a gathered-end hammock I'd get an UQ. I drop a pound if it's high summer with a lighter quilt and lighter pad.

    Camping with no tent, hammock

Like others, that's how I started...under a cheap, ginormous blue tarp on the AT in maybe....'79 or '80 as a young camper with 15 of my closest frenemies. It's been an evolution...on most solos today, 7 pounds lets me swing both ways (no, not those ways - you & your dirty mind) & I have my...

    Outback Fixed for Canoeists

So do the new Outbacks finally have a decent spread between the bars? On my '22 they only go to about 39", which I find criminally inadequate for long canoes.

    Barbless hooks

100% barbless. Any lure with multiple trebles I remove the front one. Still catch lots of fish; much easier to release them. And not impaling myself when I am three days travel from an entry is nice too.

Deep scratch on my swift kevlar

I'd do nothing. But if you wanted to spot-fill, you could. Does Swift use epoxy or vinylester? Apply whichever was used to make the boat.

    Back Pain and Paddling

I've put back bands on all my canoes - has made a difference. Bigger difference is a pretty serious strengthening regimen that I hope delays the inevitable disc surgery by 5-10 years.

    Campfire Pizza

We must first hold these truths to be self-evident: 1) store-bought pre-made/cooked/packaged pizza dough is an abomination 2) Cheddar on pizza is heresy The real trouble with backcountry pizza is getting some browning on top; it's hard even with a reflector oven. Closest I've come is browning...

    High Angle Double Blade Paddle

Did a few extended wilderness trips with a 220. Now have a 260 and much happier.

    Solo Canoe for Dogs

Not sure there's a right answer on this, but there's probably a few wrong ones. 55 pound Cerberus has a tight fit up front in my narrow boat (Savage River Blackwater), but she can turn around, she can lay down, etc...all while staying pretty centered L-R. Which I think helps stability a lot.

What do you use for a table?

Back from another trip. Table was even better with the cam straps...could really crank it down tight in all directions. A heavy whack with your hand would not move it at all. The team was very glad to have it for Lake Trout cleaning.

    Single Trip Carry Portage Techniques

Bryan's a good one for sure.

What do you use for a table?

In the photo I have cord going around the tree, however I just upgraded to mini (3/4") cam straps. Adds weight but much faster, much more solid and way less finicky to set up. There is a curve cutout with four metal spikes (screws with the heads ground off) sticking out 1/4" to provide some...

What do you use for a table?

I made this last spring & it has been on one group trip. Left it home on solo/small group trips. My back hates me when I clean fish hunched over. This table can be set up at any height (~elbow is great for processing fish) and is rock solid. Properly set up there is no give, up, down or...

    Triple Carry Portage techniques

It most certainly is - that would be heresy. You're thinking of Sheep.

    Single Trip Carry Portage Techniques

I just got the "Young Viking" model of new knee two years ago and it's been great. Planning on being fully bionic before shuffling off the coil.

    Single Trip Carry Portage Techniques

HMG makes quality stuff and you would not be the first lightweight canoe tripper to use their packs. Your philosophical description was evocative; very well phrased. One can more easily get deeper into wilderness...

    Single Trip Carry Portage Techniques

I applaud your efforts! If I am reading the site correctly, the medium is the Pioneer @ 4700 cu in, which is 77L. My pack for a 7-14 day solo is about 55L, though it is tight and I wish it were a hair bigger. It all fits, but it would be nice if I did not have to play 3D tetris every time...

    Savage River Blackwater solo canoe

Sounds like our uses are different. On the seat, mine also came with a slider but mounted on an aluminum frame rather than the carbon fiber bulkheads. Can move on the fly but it is, as you say, not dynamic. I have found that moving the seat alone sometimes does not change the trim enough. On...
