    Photo of the day

Back in 2010 I spent 3 weeks in Woodland Caribou Provincial Park, solo in wood canvas Chestnut Pal. I was wind bound so I tilted the canoe up to take advantage of the wind and sun to dry out the inside.

Ai bots threaten the digital canoeing world

I hate to sound like a broken record, but back during my tenure I vetted each and every new member. We have had 3 spammers post in the last couple of months so I believe the current system does not do an adequate job of weeding out those who will do harm. Those guys were JV team. Vetting new...

I like this picture a lot. Is that the mainland across the open water?

    Felt safe until now

I drove truck back in the day, 48’ers down into Manhattan, twin 28’ers into Brooklyn, tandem 48’ers up into Boston area. I was in my element, no worries. My two worst experiences driving my pickup with canoe on the roof were driving thru Montreal during rush hour and Ottawa during construction...

Allagash - Churchill Dam to Michaud Farm

Great pictures with captions, looks like a nice crew with some great menu ideas. I was up there a few days ago with a slide in truck camper, fortunately my new 10 ply’s held up well, the roads had a lot of loose sharp edged shale. Thanks for sharing your trip.

    Rehabbing an MR Freedom

Felt on the stems are skid plates. One thwart is ok, if you ad one behind the bow seat to make it serve its purpose, you won’t be able to solo while sitting on the bow seat, canoe reversed in a 16’ canoe, it will be two close. Those gunnels you have, while not pretty like wood, are robust...

    Rehabbing an MR Freedom

I think that’s a better idea, here’s a good source, ( you will need some G-Flex also), maybe thwarts from them too. https://www.mohawkcanoes.com/collections/all

    Rehabbing an MR Freedom

I would call Jamestown Distibutors to see what they recommend for the hull. (https://www.jamestowndistributors.com/product/epoxy-and-adhesives?gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=5612040&gclid=CjwKCAjwobnGBhBNEiwAu2mpFJS-mdKidzGKTsrkvzYTz5wLRdN4Ec3y9xDHsuOr2IFQ299oLjXM9RoC-CsQAvD_BwE)1 I used Total...

    Greetings from Maine!

Hi Neighbor, Welcome to the site, we have quite a few people from Maine here.

So what exactly is everyone up to in their non-boating hours?

Wood canvas canoes, both tripping and restoring are my Maine love now, been that way for as long as I can remember. My other interest has been old Chevy trucks, I have owned many over the years. I thought it was over when I sold my old 72 3/4 ton long bed. I sold my Tacoma at the same time and...

    Ally (Bergans) vs. Pakcanoes

I recently purchased this older Portage Pal canoe trailer for $175. After some repairs ( wiring, broken fender mount, wheel bearings), I plan to hook it to the back of my truck camper and head to northern Maine next week for my first trip with the trailer. I would rather load the canoe on the...

    1972 Old Town Chipewyan 18'

Can you weigh the canoe, that would tell you if it’s Oltanar Royalex or not. An 18’ Oltanar Roylex Chipewyan should weigh about 70 lbs, an 17’ Old Town tripper weighs about 80lbs. To me, if the 18’ royalex canoe is 10lbs lighter than a 17’ Royalex canoe, it’s because the lighter one is made from...

A La Mer du Nord 2025

They finished the trip to the shores of James Bay. Unfortunately, most of the posts the last month or so where recorded in French, or just history lessons about the area they traveled through. There where no updates in English during the most remote part of the trip. I’m under the impression...

New to me Portage Pal trailer

You’re probably right about that, but I don’t see myself in congested traffic with this rig, just early morning rural roads from my home to the north Maine woods or close by fishing/paddling ponds. I had a rental car reserved for a northern Ontario road trip later this month but I had to...

    Shop time

Besides painting, varnishing and new rails on some of my canoes, I have been busy with a couple of other shop projects. My wannigan which I always have along on wall tent trips is just too big, (24” x 14&1/2” x 12” high), I can’t handle the weight anymore. It makes a great little table inside or...

New to me Portage Pal trailer

I finished up the trailer, new wiring, fixed a broken fender mount and new bearings. Took it for a test ride, worked out well. I’m unable to lift my wood canvas canoes these days and have no interest in modern lightweights so this setup is ideal for me.

    Field sharpening

A little late but here's my stones. The one on the top is my kitchen "go to", the rounds are nice for my axes. The narrow triangular on the bottom goes with me on trips, lightweight, nice for freshing up the knife and ax, plus small enough to sharpen hooks when fishing.
