    Tripwire campsite warning devices

Critter Gitters work very well for bears or other pests intent on approaching you camp. Up on the Koyukuk River, we were sitting in the tent to avoid bugs and watched a black bear approach our camp. When the Critter Gitter went off, he not only ran away but swam the river. They sound exactly...

The top places you have ever paddled

Yellow Canoe's experience on the Teslin/Yukon trip is worth noting. The Gold Rush relics and the history of Fort Selkirk are vivid in my mind. If your thinking about that trip, read Robert Campbell's Yukon to put things into perspective. Allow a half day to study Fort Selkirk.

    Is Canoe Trolling REALLY Trolling?

    What are you fishing for?

What's going to be your first trip once the border opens

Should that border open, a second trip is planned for August pending logistics help. Four of us would leave here and enter Yukon Territory on Top-Of-The-World Highway and ferry across the Yukon to Dawson City. A couple hundred miles up the Dempster Highway, we'll jump off at Eagle Plains and...

What's going to be your first trip once the border opens

Depending on water levels, I hope to try the Little Salmon or the Pelly in Yukon Territory.......all depending on recovery of a shoulder injury.

    Moose in The Morning

Biologists tell me that we have winter ticks here but I haven't seen any moose that appeared to have any tick issues.

    Canvas summer tent

Robin, I too went to a canvas tent for our long river trips and I like it a lot. Your selected tent seems to be priced fairly. I went with the Robens Fairbanks tent out of Denmark and we Love it.....

    Rethinking Firearms

We always have a firearm with us and it's usually a shotgun as we can't take handguns into Canada.

    Sellers Remorse

Unfortunately many recent arrivals to Alaska want to participate in our great outdoors while relying on experience from more placid waters. Knik Arm is BAD WATER! His desired crossing point is at the junction with Cook Inlet.....home of the second highest tide in the world. If not timing...

    Grand Laker

Yes....I've done a bit of it myself while transporting cabin material for a friend and we see same on Yukon River occasionally with folks wanting to have a tent on the platform.

    Grand Laker

Great looking canoe! Freight canoes are quite popular here especially for the big waters where fuel availability is limited. If it weren't for this Covid issue, we'd be in Yukon Territory at this time on the Eagle/Bell/Porcupine/Yukon Rivers. About 1,000 miles depending on take out point. It...

New tires on the canoe trailer

Beautiful square stern! Besides the increased axle clearance, The decrease in RPM is often beneficial. I've gone to quite heavy duty trailers with 13" tires because of our many miles on rougher roads....Alcan and Dempster.

    Snowdrift River, Northwest Territories (2001)

As always, Pitt provides a great narrative with great photos.......a true canoeing adventure in wilderness.

    Making a fishing canoe

My buddy found a magnetic transducer bracket for his cane and it works great ....no holes....no glue....no clamps.

    USA Canada Border still closed.

You are correct in that the cruise ships disgorge huge quantities of tourists.......3 tourists for each Alaska resident but the more mobile tourists saturate any fishing area that is road accessible. The interior where I live does not get the number of tourists that the Kenai Peninsula gets...

    USA Canada Border still closed.

Hopefully that will be the end and I can spend July in YT. I usually go to YT to escape the hoards of tourists in Alaska but we won't see many of those this year.

    Wild Rice Burgers

I've got some lake rice in the pantry so I'll have to try that recipe.....sounds good! As a kid,, I poled a canoe many miles in the rice beds to make a few bucks.

    Hello from Alaska.

A welcome from another Geezer in Delta Junction. Spending more time in my freight canoes these days especially on the rivers and lakes of YT.

Tangle Lakes - Delta River - Alaska Canoe Route - Day 1

Great report Monel! It's a great trip to have a gold pan in the kit. Check the creeks on the left [west] side. The Upper Tangle lakes are a nice day trip. The old Paxson Lodge has quite a reputation but is rapidly becoming an eye sore. The owner passed away two weeks ago......my neighbor. The...

    Titanium leader

I fish extensively in Alaska, YT and Baja. Yes, the Flourocarbon is more abrasion resistant to teeth and rocks and may get you more bites when the fish are not feeding aggressively. Most saltwater tackle stores or catalogs have the sleeves in copper/steel/aluminum and wire can be bought in many...
