How fortunate. That probably kept the pestiferous deer, coons, mice and squirrels away.

Bench vs. Bucket Seats: Which Is Better On A Canoe?

That sounds plausible. The heeling I'm talking about with the SRT + Deal bucket is not nail-the-rail heeling, but moderate heeling to change the carving arc of the canoe. You don't have to shift your lateral position to get down pressure on the rail, as one usually does with a wide solo bench...

Bench vs. Bucket Seats: Which Is Better On A Canoe?

My Hemlock SRT has a Harold Deal bucket seat, which can be kneeled off of or sat upon. Harold made the mold from an old tractor seat. I kneel in the SRT (and all canoes) 90+% of the time, even when I switch paddle, but I need to change to a sitting position occasionally to relieve my ancient...

Bench vs. Bucket Seats: Which Is Better On A Canoe?

Here's an article on that subject: At the 1981 Whitewater Nationals in upstate New York, canoe racer Tom Staz arrived to the event with a boat that caused a stir among competitors. He had modified his Wenonah race canoe with a low-set bucket seat and foot braces. . . . [H]e surprised everyone...

    AI compares CanoeTripping.net with P.com

The site was started sometime in July 2011 by Willis, now deceased. We still have several active members, like @scoutergriz, who came on board in 2011. The earliest posts on the site of which I am aware are in this thread: https://www.canoetripping.net/threads/good-luck.54/#post-54

How to delete finished post instead of sending/replying

Gail, if I understand you, here are a few tips: - If you don't want to post a message you have typed in the reply message box, just delete everything in the box so it's empty. - You don't need to hit the "Reply" link in another person's post to reply to it. That will insert the other person's...

Video: HOOP clears portage trails with Silky KATANABOY and BIGBOY saws

No, not really. I don't use ferro rods. BIC does the trick for me. I do recall practicing a few strikes with a ferro rod on the 162 just to play around, but I guess it wasn't enough to leave any stains or damage the spine.

    Patrick Moore Cue paddles

I spoke to the new owner, Chad Swander, in August and he told me they had no symmetrical grips and wasn't planning on having any. He said all the palm grips are asymmetrical and so is the dragon paddle T-grip. Maybe he's changed his mind, added a new grip, or was just wrong about the dragon...

    Favo(u)rite Pastries While Wilderness Canoeing

Hating to cook at home and certainly in the bush, and usually appreciating the opportunity to force-unfeed myself to lose a few pounds, all my meals on canoe trips were Spartan. Just the lowest carb freeze dried meals I could find plus a bunch of "protein" bars for lunch and snacks. Some of...

    BIRCHBARKS IN THE UK

That's just astonishing, Nick. Good Sherlock Holmes work—beyond elementary—and a lot of, well, good fortune. Thanks for sharing this story with all that detail and those lovely photos. I'm sure some folks will have questions. I've never been in a birchbark canoe. The pictures make it look as...

    Building Laminated Canoe Paddles

Ahh. I misinterpreted the photo. I thought the paddle was flat on the table surface with the clothespins side protruding over the edge. I now can see the entire blade has been elevated off the table surface. Marc, you have referred to your different paddle models in several posts, and in one...

Impact of Heeling - Canoe Design

Very interesting. I've never heard of this, and if I've ever been thusly torqued, I guess I've never noticed. You say this only happens in your very light weight and presumably low/no rocker canoes. Shouldn't this reactive torque be more pronounced the more turnable the canoe is, due to high...
