    Sparkleberry Swamp- day trip

As mentioned previously in my Allegheny Islands report, 2025 has been unusually dry in Western PA and, by mid-October, we were in desperate need of rain. I’d been working 6+ days most weeks since returning from Canada the previous July and, by mid-October, I was in desperate need of some time...

How much have you paddled this year?

3 times, which is truly pitiful considering that one of them was a test paddle in my buddy's pond! I'll have to get back to it in '26 (I have to renew my outdoor card & Ontario fishing license too. I'm frugal enough that it will really bother me to waste money by not going :))

Ai bots threaten the digital canoeing world

I haven't messed w/ GPT but I've played around a little with the free version of Grammarly just to see what changes it might suggest (I always want to write better). The tech is developing rapidly but it's not quite there yet. Many of the suggestions that it made would change the context and a...

    Action photography dirt cheap.

I scrapped the YouTube idea because I didn't want to invest the time in editing. I prefer writing anyway, so stills make more sense. That said, when I finally return to Canada next summer, I'll be filming the whitewater sections with a GoPro (or some action camera) so that I can lift photos...

    Action photography dirt cheap.

For what you're trying to do (capture images where hands-free is the only option), I'd probably just leave it in video mode and lift the still images from it frame-by-frame. While you'd fill a memory card faster that way, there should never be a time when you miss something by just seconds...

    Scotland

Great pictures. Looks like a really cool place to paddle. Are the lochs connected... portage between them or hop in the car to the next? On your last visit, was there any notation about the bell & its significance to the spot or was it just an old bell sitting on an old altar? (Yes, I'm hoping...

Still sorting photos from Sparkleberry Swamp. These didn't make the cut.

    Milling ash rails

Well done. I always hate to see the wood wasted if left to rot when the trees die or get blown over. Hopefully, you can get them dried straight. I'll have similar issues with twisting soon as we'll be milling some Black Locust. I'm interested to see if it remains bright yellow when dry.

    Can Royalex safely freeze?

Lots of great info here https://www.canoetripping.net/threads/mad-river-cold-crack-repair.129051/#post-160099

Photos of Animals, Fish, Birds & Bugs on a Canoe Trip

The hogs I posted above were on the road from the takeout. What I want to know is how did you spot that spider at highway speed?

Photos of Animals, Fish, Birds & Bugs on a Canoe Trip

3 weeks ago, I wouldn't have considered these critters to be wildlife.

Lows Lake/ Hitchens Pond, Late October 2025

As usual, great pics Al. Thanks for posting the TR. I haven't been out much this year either but '26 will be different.

    Narrows of Lake George, NY

Pretty country for sure. I really like the shot at 2:24 of the video

Fears while paddling or on canoe trips

Well, THAT might get messy. Pretty sure the electrocution tongs at the slaughterhouses only use 250 volts for hogs and I think they keel over at pretty low amperages. On the other hand, maybe we could wake up to freshly roasted pork? That might be nice.

    Greetings From SE Pennsylvania

The sojourn is run by the Conemaugh Valley Conservancy and is a series of day trips. I've never done it personally (way too many people for my taste) but I'm sure they would welcome any & all watercraft. And, yes, we had a ton of rain thru June so water levels were good this year. You'll...

    Greetings From SE Pennsylvania

If you're paddling the Kiski-Conemaugh Water Trail, are you doing it as part of the sojourn? Traditionally, that's the same weekend as the WPASCR and you might be interested in it instead (logistics on the river are a bit harder to manage by yourself but the river is there every weekend). They...

    AI compares CanoeTripping.net with P.com

I just like that we don't have sponsored content or have to wade through ads. I've never spent much time on p.com but I thought the forum was merely one aspect of that site while CTN, as a forum only, is more of a social media / interactive experience. (like Facebook except you don't get to...

No snakes at all (now; I quit. If I keep this up, the TR won't be worth reading) :)

Fears while paddling or on canoe trips

I talked to a guy from SC DNR today and he assured me that the hogs of Sparkleberry, like the bears near me, have been hunted enough that they give humans a wide berth. I wasn't all that surprised by that info considering a couple of the hunters that I met there.
