Impact of Heeling - Canoe Design

I can see from Alans photo above why a boat heeled to the right would want to turn to the left with an even keel. There is more under water surface area on the left side of the boat (right side in photo) that would create more drag on that side. This should cause the boat to turn left. This had...

1994 Old Town Penobscot 16 Added to Fleet

Nice job on the Penobscot Mike. It sounds like you have a plan for all your boats. When you do decide to get a Prospector or similar boat I'd think about an 18 footer, or at least 17 to avoid redundancy in your quiver.

Five Days of FUNctional Freestyle Tripping in the NJ Pine Barrens

Good to know, I have one up in Ak. It's one of the boats I plan to bring back East.

    Living better electronically

I'm all for bringing electronics into the bush. It doesn't detract from my wilderness experience at all. In fact it enhances it, I've used it twice to extend a trip, once with the In Reach and once with the sat feature on my phone. I wouldn't have felt right about staying an extra night without...

    Stinky Canoe Pack

This would be a good idea even if your packs don't stink. I think the dirt in the fibers would cause it to deteriorate more rapidly.

    Stinky Canoe Pack

Some of my Duluths are almost 35 years old and I never noticed a stink. Maybe one guys stink is another guys aroma. I've never gotten a stink from natural fibers like I have from synthetics.

    Boiled Linseed Oil

I've been using it on my woodwork. I heard it turns the grain on ash black, and it does but it does protect the wood. I recently got some Badger oil but don't have enough experience with it to give an opinion.

Impact of Heeling - Canoe Design

Although I'm not yet a paddler of dedicated solo boats, I've gotten a lot out of this thread. I was surprised that Marc said "canoes steer primarily from the stern". This surprised me because there seems to be so many different ways to turn using freestyle techniques. Since a lot of them involve...

    Reservoir Manicouagan QC Aug/Sep 2025

Being someone who doesn't sleep well, I envy people that can sleep like that. In his defense I also developed different sleep habits on a long solo trip in the long daylight hours of the North. I stayed up late and woke up early. I'd have a coffee and do some fishing. After a few hours I'd have...

Impact of Heeling - Canoe Design

If you were using one side correction strokes heeling can create a carve which offsets yaw by turning towards your paddle side. No heel and no carve equals more correction in your stroke.

Impact of Heeling - Canoe Design

I've never paddled any of the boats you mentioned or any boat with differential rocker for that matter, but being opinionated I'll offer an opinion. I like a bow light trim, and with that trim I think I am creating differential rocker. The bow is free to turn, while the deeper stern will help...

    Physical Canoeing Resolutions

Hey Rippy what made you realize you weren't getting enough protein? My muscles take a long time to recover and my legs often feel weak and tired, but I think that may be the stenosis in my spine. I wonder if I'd benefit from a protein supplement.

    16 ft Old Town Canoe

Hi Mike, I don't think that boat in your OP is worth much at all, maybe a hundred bucks. On the other hand the one that Robin posted is in useable condition and is a good deal in my opinion. I like the lines of the Charles River, they appear to have some rocker and a slightly round bottom which...

Add Dental Floss to your repair kit

I forgot my toothbrush on a three day trip this spring and had to use mine to floss my teeth as my only method of dental hygiene.

I find a good day trip can be quite rewarding, and that seems like an interesting one for sure. Thanks for posting about it.

Need Wenonah 17’ seat and thwart location specs

Good call on putting the carry thwart on last. I never thought of it before but it's probably critical for an asymmetrical boat.

    The Maine Guide Paddle

A big variable is the direction of the wind in relation to your direction of travel. I can paddle directly into a stiff wind but need to keep the bow tight to the oncoming wind. If straight ahead is "12 o'clock" sometimes I can't even let the bow get to the 11 and 1 o'clock directions without...

Need Wenonah 17’ seat and thwart location specs

I measured from the tip of the decks as in the photo. The screws on the stern thwart are 72 3/8, the leading edge of the stern seat is 46 3/4. The bow thwart is 75 1/4 and the sliding seat goes from 58" to 38". FWIW the center yoke screws were 104 1/8 from the bow and 102 3/4 from the stern...
