Fears while paddling or on canoe trips

It runs on two D cell batteries. How shocking can that be? Especially to a beast covered in thick shag carpet. I'd like to see some proof.

    AI compares CanoeTripping.net with P.com

The knowledge and experience of kayakers is not excluded here. Many of us were or still are kayakers and surf skiers. Kayakers can contribute their knowledge and experience, start relevant threads, and post pictures—all on topic—in many if not most of our 39 topical forums. We actively discuss...

    Reservoir Manicouagan QC Aug/Sep 2025

You know recped as well as anyone, VA, but I suggest two possibilities. One is that recped never actually returned from Manicouagan. In fact, according to YouTube, he may have actually disappeared on day 36 of his 51-day trip on the George River in 2018. Secondly, it's probably tedious to...

Man, you take some striking photos, Al. It looks as if he's paddling in the clouds.

    AI compares CanoeTripping.net with P.com

The Google AI analysis surprised me with its speed, content and formatting. I don't read p.com very often anymore and only post here, but the AI comparison looks well-researched and accurate. In addition, the table layout is very informative. I suppose the AI is programmed to make such...

    AI compares CanoeTripping.net with P.com

Comparative activity levels Based on recent forum activity in late 2025, Canoetripping.net appears to have higher recent activity in its canoe forums than Paddling.com. While both sites remain highly relevant, their activity levels and areas of focus have diverged. Feature...

The local canoe club invited to its annual end-of-season paddling event

Danke for the pictorial report. It looks like it was a fun gathering. Especially with all those teenage paddlers. Just like in good OLD America.

Fears while paddling or on canoe trips

Probably not many of us canoe in Japan, but if you do, note that folks there are not so casual about bears . . . "The governor of Japan's Akita, a mountainous northern prefecture, has called for the military's help to protect residents from an unprecedented wave of bear attacks." "Suzuki's...

    Photo of the day

Yes, the closest town is Rimini, which is almost uninhabited. You likely put in at just about the same place on the landing's shore as I did 20 years ago with my outrigger, but at a lower water level, off to the right of the boat ramp.

    Whelen lean-to

Jim, is that the tent in your avatar, which was set up at the WCHA Assembly right outside my dorm. If so, I spent some hours in it chewing the fat with Jim and others who stopped by, or just people and canoe watching across the college lawn.

Michigan Upper Peninsula: Oct BILW Area bummer

Rhollatt, thanks for taking the time to post your trip report, pictures and warning about the water. I didn't know where the BILW was, so after I searched it, I edited the thread title to make the location more specific for search engines and future researchers.

    R.I.P. Andy

I just read a long thread that Andy started on p.com when he was diagnosed with incurable ALS. He kept posting as the disease got worse and worse. Very brave of him to do that. He got to paddle at least one last time in the Poconos with family members helping him in and out of his kayak. He...

    Photo of the day

Sparkleberry was my first reaction when I saw that photo, but my mind said, no, what would Gamma be doing way down in South Carolina. The water looks low. Did you put in at Rimini?

    R.I.P. Andy

Sad news, indeed. @Andy Sz, a passionate sea kayaker, was a fairly active member here for 10 years, after he saw the benefits of owning an open canoe, a Sawyer Summersong he proudly restored. I remember well when he invited me to paddle out to Liberty Island in NYC harbor to watch the Tall...

    Felt safe until now

Bears and guns are always popular topics. There's certainly no rule against discussing them here . . . with civility, of course. Not everyone likes those topics, and the same can be said for many of our varied topics. Some folks like X but not Y, or read W forum but not Z forum. That's why I...

    Namekagon Encounter

Tryin', thanks for taking the time time to post this trip and its numerous interesting pictures. Is that green mattress a Nemo Roamer XL? Mine was comfy for five nights two weeks ago. Is the mattress on a cot, and if so, what kind and how do you like how that works out? Shouldn't be. The...

Thoughts on Grasse River/GRB Newman Classic?

I've moved several posts about what leg to push off with and the effect of heeling on forward velocity to a new, separate thread because they have become tangential to the discussion of the GRB Newman Classic canoe and because they are interesting enough to warrant their own thread...

What leg to push off of. Effect of heeling on forward velocity.

I've moved the posts above from the Thoughts on Grasse River/GRB Newman Classic? thread because they are tangential there and because they pose interesting questions that deserve their own topical thread.
