    Physical Canoeing Resolutions

I did pushups since my army stint in the 70s. 50 each morning until I was 60, then 30. Bench pressed off and on. Now with 2 bum shoulders I’ve left my shoulders in God’s hands. Long as my arms stay attached and I can put my canoe on the roof I’m satisfied.

    Physical Canoeing Resolutions

I’m working harder than you guys when paddling. SW Ohio has the most polluted watersheds in the continent, so more resistance to the hull, of course, harder to paddle.

    Physical Canoeing Resolutions

I find fitness resolutions are best made this time of year, before the decadent and sedentary moons arrive. Keeping in shape is much easier than getting in shape. I’m no where near my peak condition, but im better than I was. Next paddling season is going to be a big one, but only if I work...

    Paddle Blade Edge Protection

My new Badgertail paddle is showing a little wear on the tip from some rocky landings. Does anyone dip their tip or run epoxy around it?

Best Places to Live in the US for Canoeing?

Ely 20 years ago. Don’t know if I’d enjoy summers there nowadays. I’d look hard at the UP of MI. Short drive to Ontario, some cleanish seasonal rivers, some awesome shoreline, and a short drive to Ontario (bears repeating).

    Non-Slip Camp Shoes

I’ve been using some lightweight waterproof high tops for camp shoes and they’re good except they are like wearing ice skates on damp rocks. I fell last year and nearly lost it this year on several occasions. So, Im wondering what folks depend on to keep upright and dry in camp.

Im considering that very thing if I can clean up other stuff and the weather forecast is good.

    September BWCA Trip

Not much sun on my week long trip to Disappointment Lake. It was only one longvportage in, and the traffic was non-stop. On the third day, I’m reading a book to my dog when a float plane makes multiple passes around the lake, then buzzes my campsite twice. Then, he lands and taxis up to my...

    Pot Dipper

My teapot has silicone dipped handles that are losing their insulation. Anyone know a good product to restore the insulated properties? Gotta remember to rotate the handles away from the twig gap.

    Over Maximum Load

My rear lining holes were about 2” over the waterline. More load up front will increase that gap a tad. Perfect location,

    Over Maximum Load

Not sure how they determine max capacity, but I wouldn’t want any more, especially since it’s my first trip with this canoe and given my past experience with big loads in heavy seas. I thought we’d bought it a couple times last year on Seagull Lake, which caused me to get the bigger canoe. I...

    Over Maximum Load

I really hate to think how much I was overloading my Magic, which undoubtedly contributed (along with my physical ailments) to being windbound for 4 days last year. Today I tested both packs in the stern, dog in front. There is lots of room for two packs back there. I used my actual loaded...

POLL: How do you pronounce portage?

I hate when snooty people correct my pronunciation of that word. If I wanted to speak French I would have taken it in high school.

Callan: Adventure Is Being Planned Out Of Existence

The short term, personal solution may very well be to not camp in parks, but that does nothing to solve preservation and the eventual disappearance of wild lands. People will tell you that internet proliferation, overcrowding of wild lands, and haphazard tourism development is integral to...

    Over Maximum Load

Just weighed my gear. While I successfully whittled it down to two loads, with my dog, the total is 10 lbs over the maximum load for my canoe. I was hoping to stay in the 80-85% of max range. Also important, without that 3rd pack, I have no idea how to trim the load with the dog. Might need...

Callan: Adventure Is Being Planned Out Of Existence

We chartered a plane in 2017 in WCPP. Dropped us in the North part of the park and picked us up in the south. Bogan was like 4 months old. Great experience but the days were filled with plane traffic all along the route. Wouldn’t do it again in a park.
