What shipping charges for a canoe paddle have you paid recently (and what carrier)?

I did an order with NRS in June, it included a Werner single blade and some other smallish items (straps + map case). The order value was $300 so I got "free shipping" but there was a $25 surcharge for the paddle. This order was shipped to Maine via UPS instead of to Canada because the...

Doing non-racing things with a racing boat?

I paddled a Jensen (not sure of the model) once and only just a short test paddle. it is the only canoe I have ever been in where I was blown away by the acceleration, speed and tracking compared to my own boats which are more "traditional" and not intended to have these attributes as they are...

Single sided correction strokes - Does your paddle touch the hull?

I'm a dedicated practitioner of the "goon" stroke, 99% of my paddle strokes (not including cross strokes in rapids / fast water) are on the right side. I do not drag my paddle shaft along the gunnel because I keep my paddle at 90 degrees relative to the water. When I get to the pry portion...

Anybody know where I can find these knee pads?

That may have always been their policy or it could be because of the current Trump Tariff issues. If anyone who is in the US and wants to buy something from Canada you should do it FAST because the US$800 de minimis exemption is going away in 3 weeks. This means that anything you import from...

First swim of the year – Lower Poplar on the Dead (ME)

If you don't have video it never happened! Here is a link to a video of both Upper and Lower Poplar at 2200cfs (yak alert), the paddler takes the river right sneak route for the lower.section. There are several places a hung up boat could force you left into a pour over + hole. I also...

    Garage Racks for Canoes

I'd provide pictures of my first attempt at canoe racks but they are buried behind a bunch of canoes! I used these supports attached to the concrete block wall of my garage. I used the 10" shelf brackets, they are obviously not long enough to support a canoe so I added square/rectangle steel...

1982 Mohawk Intrepid - To Repair or To Not Repair

I have 7 Royalex boats, all except one has had patches and or skid plates installed using epoxy over the outer layer of vinyl, the skids on my Explorer were installed over 30 years ago and are still firmly attached, on other boats I have patches that have been holding firm for 20+ years.

    Seat Pad

I have a Skwoosh pad, it's ok but I fortify it with various layers of other types of padding. My arse doesn't come with much padding and what little I had 40 years ago is pretty much gone so I have real problems on extended trips (a month+) especially if there is little in the way of major...

Zoom Earth—Live, Interactive, Worldwide Weather Maps and Forecasts

For "real-time" Sat images I was using Zoom Earth (after using the NASA version). I've recently switched to Copernicus which has somewhat higher resolution (still not the full resolution which is out there but not available on the free sites). https://browser.dataspace.copernicus.eu For...

What do you use to rustproof your wood stove in the off season?

My mother used Stove Black aka Stove Polish on the stove at our cabin, this was for a cast iron stove. She is not around to do this anymore and it's probably been more than 25 years since it was last applied. Some surface rust can now been seen on the top but I'm quite sure the cast iron will...

    Removing duct tape residue

Not so common these days but years ago lighter fluid was something that I used for this type of issue. That said I think I used acetone to remove Gorilla tape residue from a carbon paddle shaft a few years ago.

When do you use float bags?

It's all about displacement, a 100 litre dry bag filled with gear will displace the same amount of water as a 100 litre air bag. Unless your gear bag is filled with sand or concrete there will be plenty of air to provide basic flotation.

Poll: Would you rather do group meals or cook your own?

Roughly speaking...... 50% of my extended trips are solo, nothing is easier than cooking for a group of one, other than the odd "fancy" breakfast it's meal in a bag with an occasional "real" meal on a layover day or the rare time when I catch my entree. 50% of my extended trips are a group of...

When do you use float bags?

I only use them when day paddling Class III. When I'm tripping my boats are pretty full and the gear takes the place of float bags. I occasionally consider putting small float bags in the ends but I've never actually done that. My in field experience shows that with the gear secure the boat...
