    Canoe ID and restoration

Looking good. I prefer varnish on those pieces myself. Lower maintenance and good protection. You can make the last coat a satin finish if you don’t want the shine. Bob

    Backrest for a Busted Back

I use both of these and like them. I have back issues as well. Bob

    Rack Repair, and rant

Chip- I got one for you. Message me your shipping address. Send me a photo of the bottom to make sure I send the right one. I have a couple variations of that style. Disregard- I just reread and saw you got some on eBay. Bob

Really impressive Jim. Thanks for sharing your method. Bob

    (Finally) starting from scratch.

I’ve had good luck weighing multipart resins and paints with a postage scale when mixing large quantities for what it’s worth. I agree with the varnish vs poly as well. You’re making great progress! Looking good. Bob

    WCHA and Adirondack Canoe Symposium

It was good to meet and chat with Jim (Boatman53), Pat Corry, and Tsuga8. I really enjoyed the symposium and was lucky enough to win an auction for another project. Thank you to Pat and Tsuga8 for helping me cobble some crossbar extensions together. I had my doubts and took the back roads, but...

    Hi from Chicago

Welcome! I enjoyed living in Chicago in my early 20’s. I’m looking forward to your build. I have something similar cooking in my noodle as well. Bob

    Peter Hitchcock Paddle

The way I understood his explanation was it has to do with grain orientation and how that allows the amount of flex, strength, and ability to carve it so thin without compromise. I really like my Bruce Smith also, but this is very different. This obviously is all highly subjective. You don’t...

    Peter Hitchcock Paddle

Last winter I read Jerry Dennis' book, "From a Wooden Canoe". In one chapter, Mr. Hitchcock’s paddles were praised and they peaked my interest. I found his email and reached out to him to see if he was still making paddles. I received an email back that day informing me he had a couple left...

    WCHA and Adirondack Canoe Symposium

Looking forward to it. I will have my navy blue Old Town 50 pounder on the same color Volvo wagon- a coincidence I think… There are other blue vehicles and floatilla to choose from now that I think about it… so maybe not. Bob

    WCHA and Adirondack Canoe Symposium

I am curious if any member are attending either of these events the second week of July this year at Paul Smiths in NY? I will be there 7/12-15. I imagine Glenn will be there as a new board member of the WCHA and I know Benson is presenting. It would be nice to meet some folks in person...

    Map Fans

I always print out maps and use them in a waterproof case. In the winter months I enjoy looking over potential routes on larger scale maps near the wood stove. I have the GPS apps on my phone and download where I am going as a back up, but I have only needed them a couple times to confirm I...

    Fresh Fruit On Trips

I always bring a few apples. I like your grape method- will have to use a Nalgene for anything similar. Thanks.

    Lining holes

I know John Visser of Housatonic Canoe Shop is a couple hours from you in Little Falls, NY. He primarily works on wood and canvas, but I know he dabbles in the dark arts of Royalex from time to time. Worth a call or email I’d say. He does nice work. Phone: (203)-470-2031 E-mail...
