New To Canoe, But Not To Paddling

Welcome. I'd not heard of paddleways... Might have to look into that. People often seem surprised that canoes typically weigh less than yaks. They're also easier to get gear in & out of so I doubt that you'll ever go back. Besides, you simply look better paddling with a canoe paddle instead...

    97° F (36° C), 108° F (42° C) RealFeel, in NW Connecticut

Hmm... It's been hot here but it's been hot in July for the past 60+ years IIRC. I figure that I've no one to blame but myself; I had a whole year to move someplace cooler. Maybe, as I get ready to retire, I'll buy a house in Ontario and one in Mississippi (Alabama? Louisiana?). I could...

    Evolution of an Alaskan DipShip

Someone can make such a boat... you! Given your other projects, you can build a stripper. The Raven I just completed might be an excellent solo craft for you, mine is built from Tamarack so it's heavier than it should be and tips the scales at 50#. I'd be willing to bet that, built stemless...

Is this route doable for a novice solo paddler?

You did the same route? I'd say your thoughts are at least as legit as anyone else's... no one else who's responded has even been to that park.

Is this route doable for a novice solo paddler?

I have no experience w/ Temagami either but your mileage (kilometerage?) seems very reasonable as does the route selection to minimize wind and current. Planning for a rest day is good as well. I always plan one but have never (yet) actually taken one. I'll look forward to a possible TR to...

    What are you reading?

Canoeing with the Cree by Eric Sevareid. I'm unsure how I've missed it up until now.

    Chestnut Pal for sale

Wow, that's gorgeous! Seems cheap for what it is... wonder how long it will last?

A La Mer du Nord 2025

Good. THOSE I can afford. (stooopid language barrier) :)

A La Mer du Nord 2025

Forgive my ignorance but... VFI? Only "VFI" with which I'm familiar is a military interceptor which is beyond my budget.

What do you use to rustproof your wood stove in the off season?

Sorry to be late (and have no experience with a hot tenting stove) but, if you're worried about it turning rancid, would smearing the stove with a light coating of Crisco work? Seems like it takes me a couple of years to go through a whole tub at home & it ages well. Maybe get it warmed up a...

Rainy Lake, WA - Snowy day trip

Great TR & certainly a unique setting. remind me to be mindful of this on any trip planning advice.

    Hood loop tie downs

THAT, I could probably live with. I played with under-hood loops on the old Ranger & couldn't stand looking at the ropes. A single line to the center of the hood was acceptable (barely) and this set-up seems to be visually similar. I'll have to remember to try that if I ever feel the need to...

Raising seat height in my new Esqiif Echo?

Thread drift alert: I think everybody says "gunn-ells" despite the spelling. Is there anyplace that they say "gun-WHALES"?

    Wasioto Whitehall Build

Get the experience with this hull & re-evaluate afterward. It really doesn't take much change in hull shape to become "unique" although some minor tweaks may change handling characteristics significantly (for better or worse).

    First Paddle in NW Solo

Personally, I can't stand staring at ropes for hours on end so I tie around the hull at the first roof rack station and call it good. Very cool that the pup likes it and even better that you seem to.

    Trip Recommendations in Northern Sask

I'd think that it's absolutely OK to revive any old thread that seems relevant to your current inquiry or ability to provide updated information. (although, for the TR, please crop out the 'Yak ;)) IME, for Pike, Walleye and solitude, you can't go wrong in NW Ontario. @memaquay has provided...

and if not... I guess it makes the TR more interesting.

Thoughts on double bladed paddles from a somewhat experienced double blader.

No. Use a single blade... like a man. (sorry, I couldn't resist. OK... I suppose that I could, but what fun is THAT?)

    Bears and Meals

I think the safe bet is to assume that the bear can smell it and will eat whatever is available. I guess barrels or vaults are required now in the BWCA but I'd still hang. (Better safe than hungry)
