    Camp Temagami here we come!

I like this sentiment! I have looked at the pictures of the young crews arriving back at Temagami base after extended trips and I see capable, confident faces of young guys and gals ready to take on the next challenge in life with aplomb.

    Stewart River 14' Solitude

I posted the canoe because I'm having a hard time NOT buying it! In spite of being a notorious tightwad with my money, I believe this is a good deal. I always wet-foot my canoes; landing, loading/unloading, and launching so I would never abuse the hull. It would last me a long time, then...

    Stewart River 14' Solitude

Not my listing, but I couldn't help but post it here for the admirers of w/c canoes. Highly respected builder. Perhaps an ideal solo canoe for a smaller paddler. Note the builders' description mentions extended trip use...

    Chestnut Chum questions

I'll dip my toe into this discussion. I own both a mid-century Chestnut Chum and a one-off wood canvas canoe purportedly built by the previous owner as a Jack's Special. The dimensions of a given canoe in specifications and as-built, then used and perhaps stored poorly, can vary significantly...

    Odd question re: Center yoke

I tried that hanging Nalgene idea to balance my w/c canoe on a portage.... until a stumble stressed the plastic cap retainer and broke it! Was a functional idea though and can be accomplished by lashing paddles, pfds, etc. in to balance the canoe. I did reverse the orientation of my yoke on...

CanoeTripping.net Shirts, Hats or Other Merchandise

I like this idea too! I always carry a bandanna for all the above reasons, and fondly recall the many Boy Scout first aid competitions where the triangular bandage was employed for stabilizing arms, ankles, head wounds, etc. Many uses indeed!

Birchcliffe Cabin, The Nipissing River and Some Hills (Algonquin Park)

Interesting and entertaining trip report as usual. I've read a few Maple Creek stories..... this was a good one!

    Which PFD do you have?

Just came across this... https://mustangsurvival.com/products/minimalist-belt-pack-md3070?utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=23852475790770629&utm_content=23852475790800629&content=23854912917150629&fbclid=IwAR0oLd-ZW14WqnVfhly2ix5FJdvSYH120vG4kqhHF3bwVJFCdkSaw7tPiLA 18 lbs...

A Stripper and a Composite Copy

I made a pair of scissor stands after seeing yours in an earlier post. With the carpet strips mine function as upright hull supports or, partially closed and inserted under the inverted hull like your first picture, the carpet pads the interior of the canoe as well. Here, I'm washing a...

    Poll: Socks and Sandals?

Sandals and neoprene socks, both wet-footing and portaging.

Hit by a Car on Bike

I can relate. Here's to a speedy recovery! When cycling down a local hill at what I call "terminal velocity"- when I can no longer keep up with the pedals in high gear, about 45 mph, I T-boned a whitetail deer which leapt off the high bank to my right. I hit it broadside in mid-air, the bike...

    The Rainbow-Debsconeag Wormhole

Many thanks for the enjoyable trip report Goonstroke! Now, if you could please transit the Churchill Lake to Aroostook River via the Steele route; North Twin Brook, Spider Lake, Chase Lake, Munsungan Lake..... so I'll know if it's worthwhile? Just joking. Problem for me is that I can't...

Appears to be a Chestnut, reasonably priced in northwest Vermont

    whitewater chain of command

Because (in my experience) the stern paddler can see the entire canoe in relation to water flow, obstacles, and to set up for the next set of obstacles. The bow paddler is perhaps 9'-10' ( one, maybe two strokes) closer to the obstacle than the stern paddler in a 17' canoe. Not a distinct...

Should tandem paddlers ever paddle on the same side?

In reply to the original query.... I began my paddling, and formed my habits thereof, on whitewater. The fundamental lesson then was to never paddle on the same side. I was taught as the stern paddler (which I have always been) to call out commands to the bow paddler simply as "right", "left"...

    An old neighbors ax

Hey Black fly, thanks for posting that great video! His handle carving technique has lots of similarity to carving a paddle from one board; the centerline reference, etc.

    Sewing projects

Nice work! I don't have any current sewing projects but I admire yours!

You want to take that tub.....where?

I know how they do it.... On the carry between Little Clear and St. Regis ponds I observed keel-drag marks in every soft or muddy spot, and paint (or colored plastic) on the rocks in rocky spots. Apparently, fit/younger paddlers drag their heavy canoes (tubs) rather than carrying!

    Physical Conditioning for Canoe Tripping

I just keep in shape by continuing to work in my "retirement". Doing projects like this one, up & down ladders all day and toting heavy pressure treated lumber gives me all the workout I need for tripping. By comparison, the occasional portage or long day paddling is a "walk in the park".
