    Kneeling Part 1

Hmm? I must be in a different position when kneeling. It sounds like you have your back arched when kneeling. When I'm kneeling and paddling I am reaching out further in front with the paddle and my lower back is rounded, or in flexion. That is what opens up the passages where the sciatic nerves...

    Kneeling Part 1

I kneel about half the time because it takes all the pressure off my lower back. If anyone has compressed discs or problems with sciatica, then kneeling is the perfect solution. My ability to be in a boat for a long time is a function of being able to change position frequently. Whenever I kneel...

Wenonah Kevlar skin coat repair/refurbish advice?

No problem Clint, there’s a lot to learn about people’s actual experience with all these different resins. I hope you got an answer to your questions. Mark

Slotted gunnels/gunwales in a solo - yeah or nay?

I build all my canoes with the slots or scuppers. They don't serve any real purpose in my opinion other than weight reduction. I have never tied anything to mine, but i occasionally jam a stick in one to hold my fishing rod while trolling. If the gunwales are going to be hard wood, you might...

Wenonah Kevlar skin coat repair/refurbish advice?

Thanks Deerfly. These boats are skin coat, not gelcoat. It got confused up above when someone asked about gelcoat boats, but hopefully your comments will help them out. The skincoat boats are essentially just fabric and resin with no other coating. The resin erodes over time due to UV and normal...

Algonquin Park solo video (campfire tent in the rain mishap)

Ha! From the title I was expecting him to light that stick stove inside the tent, but I see now the tent is called the campfire. It turned out much better this way. Mark

Wenonah Kevlar skin coat repair/refurbish advice?

Mike, the gelcoat boats aren't mine, I was just answering a question from Clint. I agree though, I wouldn't consider removing gelcoat. SG - I'm only doing small repairs and laminating new glass to small areas. The entire boats might get a coat of resin to seal the kevlar, but that's up to the...

Wenonah Kevlar skin coat repair/refurbish advice?

Just talked to Susan at Wenonah for a while, who was extremely knowledgeable about the construction, repair and everything else about their skin coat boats. She said they are/were made with either vinyl ester or polyester resin. Wenonah uses polyester resin and fiberglass exclusively for all...

Wenonah Kevlar skin coat repair/refurbish advice?

I guess it depends on how extensive the cracks are and how easy it is to get the gelcoat to flake off. I don't know about trying to sand it all off. That sounds like a chore, especially trying to not sand too deep.

Wenonah Kevlar skin coat repair/refurbish advice?

Mem and MIke. Sounds like epoxy will work fine, so I may consider going that way since it's something I know about. Raka makes a UV inhibited epoxy, which might be a way to go to avoid varnish or paint. I have so many boats to do, and I don't have room in the heated shop to hold on to a boat for...

Wenonah Kevlar skin coat repair/refurbish advice?

I'm curious if anybody has made significant repairs to a Wenonah skin coat kevlar boat, but mostly curious about long-term results? I am doing repairs of over a dozen of these canoes this winter. They have been literally ridden hard and put away wet for a number of years, with some much worse...

Fears while paddling or on canoe trips

I am most concerned about inadvertent falls, either in camp or on a portage trail. I have had a few close calls with falls, or with balancing on trees to get through some downfall. I think about how easily I could have lost balance and snapped a leg. I have slipped on roots and ended up on the...

    Delftship Files

Oh, since you already have a digital model have you tried to import it directly? I'm sure you've looked into that since you appear to be computer savvy. If you can make a model like that I think you'll probably be up and running in Delftship in no time. I'll send you a couple delftship files. Mark

    Delftship Files

Hi Jeff - I sat down and learned Delftship last fall and built a few canoes from the designs over the winter. I have a number of different kinds of canoe models in delftship, most of them dead end boats that I will never build, and should never be built. I started learning the software by...

    15' Willow updates

I agree with Robin. I think people tend to go a little overboard with covering the wood with something. I'm currently working on a canadian canoe of unkown origin that the builder decided to coat every piece of wood with something. It needs a number of ribs replaced, but I stopped after 2...

    Clinch Nail lengths...

They look legitimate. I think if you call them you'll know right away if they're the real thing. Just ask them some questions about clinching, it should be obvious. Do you intend to use 3/4" copper tacks? Post some pics of your experiment. Mark Mark
