    Hemlock SRT struggles

Are you sitting or kneeling? I’ve only had my SRT since June, so I’m far from an expert. It definitely has twitchy initial stability, but I feel pretty stable sitting with a full tripping load and with my feet on the foot pegs. Does yours have foot pegs? If not, maybe something to look into...

Portage, campsite and other signs (of civilization)

Wabakimi is an interesting study in contrasts. Fly in fishing lodges. Campsites with fillet tables, spent propane canisters, picnic tables, alongside old campsites with lichen growing in the circle of rocks that once hosted at least one campfire, and areas where portage landings are almost...

Thunder boxes, are they good or bad?

In the BWCA, I think Thunderboxes are absolutely necessary. In the Quetico, not so much. My teenager preferes the BWCA to the Quetico because of the Thunderboxes in the BWCA. We disagree on this point. :) I prefer the BWCA style Thunderboxes to, say, the outhouses one finds at the free campsites...

    BWCA Round Lake loop

Fun report! My son and I canoed part of your route last summer (we went Birch, Knife, down to Kek, Gabi, Little Sag, Frost River, Long Island, out at Round) and also took a solo last year in Wabakimi, so I greatly enjoyed your solo adventure. Way to perservere!

    Dream canoe dream rigging

Well, I figure with winter raging it's time to close the loop and report back. Got the dream SRT a few weeks before my planned trip departure in July. Dave Curtis did the canoe outfitting. He installed foot pegs, neoprene pads, Northwater d-rings, and padding onto Harold Deal's (RIP) signature...

How much do you baby your composite boat on shore? (susceptibility to scratches?)

I took a brand-new Hemlock SRT on a Wabakimi solo last summer. For the first several days I applied duct tape skid plates hoping to minimize damage. After several days and re-applications I gave up. I do try to baby my composite canoes (I also have a Swift Osprey), but I also recognize that...

    Solo - fears and boredom

I was recently out on my longest solo by a large margin and was pleasantly surprised that I still liked my own company by trip end. Like Alan, I tend to spend quite a bit of time on the water. On my most recent trip I found myself so busy that I really didn't have time to be bored--and I did...

30 days in Wabakimi with a wood canvas canoe

Nice. I’m excited to follow this as I did a 23 day solo last summer in wabakimi, starting from the same spot.

Deleting a route via the garmin website

I have created a few routes I want to discard, but when I go to routes and click, hit delete, it gives me a confirm delete message, which I also click, yet the route remains? Any help would be appreciated.

    Amok Draumr Hammock

I used one briefly, though perhaps not enough to fully gauge. It was very comfortable and I think side sleeping is definitely possible. I really didn't like the awkwardness of getting in and out of it given the teeter-totter balance point, but I think it's something one would get used to over...

last minute albany river shuttle logistics

Hi all, I'm planning a solo trip on the Albany river, putting in on Osnaburgh lake, and my ride to the put in just fell through. I'm wondering if anyone knows of anyone that could provide a shuttle drop from Thunder Bay to Osnaburgh (I'm coming from Duluth). I was thinking I could perhaps get a...

Simple bannock and other reflector oven ideas

Hi all, I'm planning on a long solo this summer, bringing along a collapsible reflector oven. Though my meals are largely going to be of the freeze dried or mac and cheese variety, I'd like to make bannock and perhaps a few other goodies in the reflector oven. Being lazy, I'm looking for as...

Bear bangers and bear spray in USA

I've been looking around for the pen style bear banger and have so far only found Canadian retailers that can't or won't ship to the U.S. Can anyone link me to a usa retailer?
