    First build, sanding issues...

A Random orbital sander will leave Swirl marks. They are hard to see, but once epoxy is applied, they are there laughing at you. I start with a plane, and a rasp where needed. A ROS comes next. A Fairing board, and finish with the pool noodle. My best method is to wrap a short section of...

    A Raven from Scratch

No I don't angle the mortise, but that would be a great option ! My mortise is pretty shallow. I fear going any deeper, as it would reduce the strength of the frame. My seats are heavier than most commercial seats I've handled, but my seats are bigger also. Just my tendency to make things a...

    A Raven from Scratch

Actually with the shallow mortise on mine, no screws are needed. The pull of the lacing, or webbing, keeps everything in place. If I can eliminate screws ? I do, they are always the first place, rot develops ? Jim

    A Raven from Scratch

To me ? I'd say you cut the notches wrong. It looks like you have weakened the joint. Now you are relying on glue to strengthen you seat. Here is a pic, of how I've built all my seats, without one failure, supporting a 240# man.

    "Fly Ply" Canoe build video

Thanks Sam ! I'm sure others will enjoy this ! FREE ? That's the way designs should be ! I think I have a Metric tape measure. If not ? I'll get one ! Thanks again ! Jim

    "Fly Ply" Canoe build video

I'm getting more excited, even though I'm in the process, of building two canoes. How do I go about purchasing plans ? Jim

    "Fly Ply" Canoe build video

Looks great samb ! So could you share more details as to the construction ? Did you need to steam the hull ? And How ? How wide was the plywood, when you started to bend it ? Thanks ! Jim

    "Fly Ply" Canoe build video

I've seen this before, and wondered, if anyone has attempted to build a Tortured hull ? I have a couple sheets of 3mil Okume. I may try this one day ! Here is the video, and I believe there is a link, that gives instructions !

Results of the more stringent 2024 bear-proofing food storage rules in the BWCA

I bit the bullet, and purchased two BV500 Bear Vaults. A tricky lock feature, easy, once you learn the trick. I really like, as It keeps me better organized, and even the small camp raiders out. Now If I can only reduce what I take for food. To only need one ! Ha ! Jim

    Triple Carry Portage techniques

Start with a Kevlar copy of your favorite canoe. See my last build thread . 🥹 Then take a few College boys, and one College girl ! The Boys will be trying so hard to impress the girl ! You may not have to carry anything ! Faking an old Football injury might also help ! I've been three...

Side flotation: How it helps emptying water and assisting re-entry

The Little Egret canoe, already has rather large flotation chambers, and the paddler, has a good life jacket, that keeps him high above the water. Two big advantages, not to mention the small size of the canoe. Interesting ! Jim

    Strip Glue Review

Thanks, but I'm more on the natural side. I have thought of using Polyester Camo cloth, on a canoe though. Bought some, but that's as far as I've gotten with it.

    Strip Glue Review

Just to throw another item in. Hobby Lobby has these glue applicators, that I love. When not applying glue, I keep the cap on, and upside down. This insures I have fresh glue, when I'm applying. If you can find these ? They are great ! Jim

    Strip Glue Review

Open time on the above three, is fine, for me. The ability of a glue staying where I put it, without running off, is important to me. Gorilla did great, as does Elmer's Max. Titebond III worked without issue. Bead and Cove, along with tilting my strongback, solved that problem. I just...

    Strip Glue Review

Most definitely ! My second choice would be the Gorilla glue.

    Strip Glue Review

I know it really doesn't matter what glue you use to glue your strips, structurally, as they get covered with epoxy. But here are the three glues I've used. Elmer's Max, has been my favorite, and still is. The color draws me to it, as it blends the best with Cedar, under epoxy. I use it to...

    Solo on the Light Side

Great work Brian ! I used to seal coat, many to facilitate filling gaps and holes. Shortly after applying the seal, I'd come back and go over the staples holes, with another coat, worked fine. The main problem with seal coating, was be sure there are no dust particles in the seal coat. If not...

    Solo on the Light Side

A few notes. Next time, go Cove up ! You will find several benefits. Tilt you strongback, if you worry about the glue running out of the coves. Easy solution ! Fitting the strips in the football is easier too. Trimming the strips at the transition, from vertical to horizontal, is a challenge...
