Very sad - Another fatal bear attack

Skinney Moose As unlikely it is that I will ever encounter such a scenario like your experience it does help keep me aware, practicing prevention and being prepared. So glad she was in the backpack.

Very sad - Another fatal bear attack

"This is the first fatal bear attack in the province since 1983." (Quote is taken from CBC article above) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_fatal_bear_attacks_in_North_America Bears are scary and rather unpredictable. Many of us have literally spent years of our lives sleeping in tents...

    Closing Rethinking firearms

That is one of the most civilized discussion around guns and carrying in the back country that you will find on any forum anywhere on the internet. We didn't even cross the Midwestern nice line let alone some other line. There is a time and place to close threads. Dave I respect and...

Portage clearing in the Greenstone Region

Bud Lite why would you drink that crappy beer? Haven't you acquire the taste for something good. A good IPA often has a 6-7% alcohol and allows you to not carry as much on the ports while still having the desired effect. Grab a Stout or Porter and you can even cut back on food weight.

Trolling with a fly rod for salmon/brook trout

The Salmon and Brookies need high dissolved oxygen. The dissolved oxygen level increases as the water temperature decreases. Therefore this time of year they will be down deep as stated above. They will come up into warmer waters to chase food but not for long. I was trolling to other day...

    Rethinking Firearms

I wonder how much our media environment hijacks our biological programing leading us to the believe of increased crime and loss of civility. The Facebook, twitter, Instagram etc. throw ads and info based on our clicks to similar media and intern sell advertising. We have evolved to watch our...

    Rethinking Firearms

I am young in my mid forties and think culture, technology and many other things are changing faster and faster each year. It is a little scary to me but it has little affect on my life. I assume that has happened to every proceeding generation yet at a slower pace. I have found many people...

    Rethinking Firearms

What makes them punks? Having taught thousands of students I often found the scariest looking kids were some of the coolest. You sure they didn't want to ask you why you put lining lines on a Magic? ;) Seems like an over reaction to flash your weapon just because your scared of some kids...

    Pilgrims ruining parks

Where is today's Lady Bird Johnson? I try to do my part and pick up trash regularly. Only anecdotal evidence but if there is already trash on the ground people are more likely to trash it more then if it is clean and trash free. Off course some idiot seems to start the cycle at some point.

    Rethinking Firearms

I think they make other protection for that type of encounter. I am always amazed at the folks who feel a need to carry a weapon while in the back country. I have spent close to 30 years in the wilds and all together spent years living in tents. I have never once thought I wanted a weapon...

    A lightweight "stand-up-able" solo canoe?

I would agree with Stevet these would all be good designs for SUPing.

    A lightweight "stand-up-able" solo canoe?

I have been thinking about picking up a SUP paddle for quite some time. The view while standing is really nice. I was standing and lily dipping down a river last night in my Trillium. The two paddles I had with me weren't long enough to really dig in. I only weight 160 5'10" mid forties with...

    Resurrecting a Blue Barrel

I either blame my cheap shipping choice which saveed me 4 dollars or most likely Capitán Pato was a sleep on the job.. It is good you bought some I sent a small amount. It was the available container that I thought would survive the trip. The KOE works awesome and is not unpleasant to work with.

KOE will work on your cat pee issue. If it does not work on barrel I would try isopropel alcohol which is a common organic solvent.

    Resurrecting a Blue Barrel

It is not nearly as generous has you have been with all of your posts, and experiments. It is the least I can do to show a little appreciation. I don't have any special directions except that it is a 1/4 ounce per gallon. Mix up a gallon scrub the inside shake around, rinse and give smell test...

    Resurrecting a Blue Barrel

Mike your cleaning solution should be to your place tomorrow. USPS tracking# 9500110864020171386660 Not sure how the Vinegar (acetic acid) and baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) would be helpful. Either the acid or the base might be helpful but not together. It would create a simple acid base...

    Another Million Dollar Idea

I was totally unaware of Fry bake pans. Thanks for the insight. I can't believe the prices on camping pots and pans. Fry bake is pricey but unique while some of the other stuff is crappy and expensive.

    Resurrecting a Blue Barrel

Groover? I didn't think that was common expression. I know it as the grooves imprinted on your behind from large ammo can used for portable toilet. Lucky for me I worked the season after they upgraded to a much better option. The expression going grooving, headed to grove etc and the usual...
