    Thwarts & Seat placement opinions

Yes, it's the Traveler model. I'm going to add a thwart and lower both seats and see how that works. I still may play with seat placement at some point. The leading edge of the bow seat is 7" further from the end than the leading edge of the stern seat. If I move the bow up a bit there would...

    Thwarts & Seat placement opinions

I've considered that but I usually have no issues with balancing weight on a trip using placement of gear and my 70 lbs pup.

    Thwarts & Seat placement opinions

Looking for some opinions and I know I'll get them here! Maybe even a few related to my questions......:) So my 17' Merrimack get rather unstable when someone north of 220 lbs is in the bow seat. The hull is a kevlar/carbon build and it's a symmetrical canoe. First thwarts, there is no...

    Looking for some paddle insights

I think you will like that paddle, the folks at Sanborn (my nephew) make some great stuff.

    Useless countdown activities

Yeah but how many times do you pack and unpacked your pack?

    Yet another first(ish) time builder

This is more of a general question but it does relate to your build - why do home builders use twice as many layers of various cloth when building vs manufacturers who only use two or maybe 3?

    Gunnel plug

l went with the epoxy/sawdust fill method. Doesn't look as good as a plug but is probably better in the long run.

    Yet another first(ish) time builder

Maybe, how smooth could you get it is the question. The issue might be getting it to release, I know nothing about vacuum bagging so I don't know if one layer of fiberglass over wood would work or not.

    Yet another first(ish) time builder

I think if you're going to vacuum bag you're missing a big step. 1. Build your strip and finish the outside with tooling gelcoat, that becomes your plug. 2. Use the plug to make a mold starting by using a release agent, then going gelcoat then usually just layers of fiberglass because of cost...

    Gunnel plug

Pretty much decided I'm making an ash plug, just wondered if I should drill it out and make the plug go all the way through.

    Gunnel plug

A couple of years ago I added a 3rd seat to my canoe. Worked great for tripping with 3 people especially if the 3rd was a kid. I've decided to pull it for now and if I do want 3 again I'm going to use a different seat so I need to plug 2 of the holes I made to hang it. Question is this -...

    Broke Rod

I'm like Jim, pole rides in the canoe over portages.

    Is Canoe Trolling REALLY Trolling?

Been canoe trolling for over 50 years, never felt the need for any pole longer than 6.5', medium weight. I think the fact that you're most likely going slower than boat trolling and not using a down rigger or heavy weights makes a long trolling rod unnecessary. Just my opinion though.

    What Do You Troll?

I usually have a jerk bait following me, either a shallow or deep diver depending on the lake.

    Carbon / Kevlar BLACK Pearl

You should join me in May with that beautiful canoe as I explore the old portages from lake two to clearwater. Going to camp in the PMA on Rock island lake.

    Weather radios and tripping

Could be but having my weather, gps, compass and emergency satellite sos all in one small device far outweighs taking a weather radio, IMO.

    Weather radios and tripping

Yep, the inReach weather is great.

The Advantages of Screwing on Gunnels !

Jim, I know we prefer different methods for securing gunnels and I've been thinking like this. If the canoe is loved and well cared for and properly stored it probably doesn't matter whether you glue or screw. I've seen plenty of old canoes with screwed gunnels that are in great shape. BUT...

    Another BWCA route suggestion

Yeah, that's why I'm headed to a PMA in may. Only 1 group allowed in per week and you can camp anywhere.
