    A Tale of Two Trippers

I sure liked my Tripper purchased new direct from OT in the spring of 1983 using a relatives SC Johnson employee discount. As I recall I paid $600 and I got the $75.00 shipping cost refunded due slight shipping damage from the trucking company. Shortly after I got the boat a buddy and I ran it...

Weather: Was it colder when you were a kid?

When I consider the question, I think back to my youth growing up a couple blocks off Lake Michigan in SE Wisconsin. I spent every summer day at the beach and my recall is that the warmest the lake got to be was generally in the 60’s. Many days I came home with a tight chest and blue lips from...

    Wabakimi is the Plan

Try contacting Clem Quenville, a local First Nations guy in Armstrong who is a good contact for road shuttles and secure vehicle storage. I have been told he also allows his customers to camp overnight on his property before/after trips. He is very reliable and reasonably priced. He is also the...

    Wabakimi is the Plan

BF - other than some of the most popular routes (Kopka Rv; north on the Allenwater Rv from Allanwater Bridge off the railroad) there is no competition the campsites because there are few to no other parties. A number of years ago we met an older, overweight woman paddling solo. She and her...

    Wabakimi is the Plan

BF - you can get permits from any outfitter in the area or buy them online from Ontario Parks. In the park you will need a provincial park permit and on surrounding Crown Lands you need a Crown Land Camping permit. No need to get your permits early, the park and surrounding Crown Lands don’t get...

Weather 1/25: Cold, Cold, Cold, Wind, Wind, Wind, Wind

And I was feeling a little sorry for myself that at age 77 I still have to spend my winters in southern Wisconsin dealing with 4” snowfalls while friends and family members snowbird the winter in the south.

    Judging a person on appearance

I remember similar reactions from California guys I encountered in the service while stationed on the west coast. While they came across as friendly, hip and cool they were often a bit condescending when they found out I was from Wisconsin. California was obviously the cool place to be from.

Charity paddles- what length do you think?

From what you’ve shown us with your paddles, I am sure your craftsmanship will be fine. When you attend the dinner make sure to wear your dress flannel shirt.

Double blade paddle . . . worth it?

When the safe padding advocates taught me that alcohol and water don’t mix, I decided to stick to beer and red wine while underway and save the whisky and water for the campsite.

    Winter Solstice Poling Cruise

Very nice video and it encourages me to try poling, once the local river thaws out. The Nashua looks very much like my home stream the Root River just north of Racine WI.

    16' wooden Great Canadian canoe

Nice looking canoe. It has a nice used looking patina. Maybe keep it as is.

    Sit-on-top CANOEs

In a recent thread I posted regarding the boat rental trend at the nature center where I am a volunteer. Kayaks are by far the most popular rental, especially the SOT variety - much easier to get in/out of and almost no capsize incidents. So for the general public, this type of boat makes the...

What do you think about the idea of having vendor forums?

Worth a try. And as Jm suggested above, mods could enforce restriction on posting within the dedicated forum, being responsive to member inquiries and monitor for posts unrelated to our interests.

What height boots do you prefer?

I have used Chota Quetico Trekker boots, which are no longer made, replaced by a newer version at a higher price. As far as I know, these boots are only available through Piragis in Ely MN. I settled on these boots for the ankle protection and support which became important as I participated in...

Who’s still paddling a Royalex solo boat

I have a nice lightly used Wenonah Wilderness in T-Formex that I acquired about 5 years ago. I bought it intending to use it on the rocky streams of Michigan’s UP but have yet to do so. I am gradually turning into a base camper I guess.

    What are you reading?

BF, you sound like me. The older I get the more I find some things I read in the past are mostly, if not, all new to me. I have taken to marking my completed reads with my name/initials and a date.

    Single Trip Carry Portage Techniques

My sentiment exactly. I always enjoyed the walk back while portaging.

    Single Trip Carry Portage Techniques

This is the approach I have been using starting in the spring each year to prep for trips. I carry a 60# OT Penobscot RX around the local nature center from March to the paddling season, working up to 1/3 mile. I began doing this in 2017 to condition myself for a 3 week river trip. Along with...
